Thanks to the help and coaching from a few on this board, I finally completed my restoration of an old Elk deadhead that a neighbor gave me. Lots of questions and Youtube videos helped also. It's probably a bit darker than I originally anticipated, but I think it looks good and decided to leave well enough alone. This thing was pretty old, broken up and chalky, and now it sure looks the part. Anyone have questions or need help with their projects, just holler.

As I said, I thought about lightening it up some, but the darker brown looks pretty powerful.

Let me know what y'all think.

Anyone have brackets or hook suggestions that they like... that are foolproof in putting something like this on the wall?

Looks good. I just drill a 3/4” hole in the skull and hang them on a lag bolt.

Nice job! I wouldn't hesitate to put it on my wall.

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.

What substance did you use to darken the antlers ?

Did you try potassium permanganate ?

Thanks for all of the comments. I'll look up the bracket suggestion and think on the lag bolt idea.

I ended up using Early American stain over a basecoat of white paint. This was after using woodX to fill cracks etc, and sanding. Used Apoxie Sculpt to rebuild the 4 broken tips.

The first coat really evaporated and disappeared in many places. Put a second coat of white latex over that...then the Second coat of stain got it done.

Wish I'd have taken more before pictures, because it was rough when I started. I'll dig and see if I can find any closeups.

If anyone needs help, please holler. I'll be happy to assist any way that I can. Not a pro yet, but I'm kinda confident at least now!

Like the guys said above. Skull Hooker, make a bracket for about any animal.
