I hired mine done as I know my expertise isn't a finish operator. Pop track on it will teach you a new vocabulary and a serious dent in the bank account.

I’d go with CAT myself, but I’m used to the bigger machines here it’s cheaper to rent by the month.

Personally, I think it depends on a few factors - what do you need to get the job(s) done, do you have land that will always need excavator work, expect to need, rent, or hire someone else to do the job(s), How much $$$$$$ do you have to spend? . . . I have had many different size tractors and skids, but sure enough, I somewhere down the road I needed an X and had one bad time trying to find / hire a contractor to work without charging a zillion $ per hr / day . . . and I OFFERED CASH! After 3 years of going through this crap, "I bit the bullet". Now I can do what I want, when I want, and don't have to put up with waiting. It was pay now or pay later. I've never looked back or regretted it :-)

Will get flack for this, but you can but a Chinese 4 ton unit new for 12-14k. I bought their one ton version earlier this year to install a french drain. It worked flawless. I paid 4500 for it. Materials for the job were 1k. I got contractor bids of 10 to 12k. I did it for half and still have the machine.

The larger 2 to 4 ton units have pilot controls, expanding tracks, and swing booms.

I got a great deal on a new 2023 model because there are several Kubota dealers in my area. Price + negotiating + CASH was the ticket. One was $95K, one $87K, and the best was $74.8K delivered with a backup camera, 36" grade bucket, and the first 500 hr. service included. laugh

Reminds me of a saying a local contractor usd, " but, for a little bit more, you can do it yourself."
