These timber stand improvements have been ongoing, this week- punching in some patch openings focusing on centralizing bedding areas on my property, Mainly aspen, cherry, birch, maple and some ash. Looking forward to the aspen regeneration next year, getting those new stems and light to the forest floor- best browse plots ever. Also punching in new kill plots, every kill plot also gets it’s own water hole. Messing up early bow but the weather forecast has been high 80’s.

The popple is on it’s way today to LP in Hayward, all the cherry goes to smoker pellets (even though it’s cabinet quality) and the ash - firewood.

Those Aspen whips will come in thick the grouse and woodcocks love that mess until it thins out naturally. Lots of deer feed on its way maximum growth vey nice.

It looks like that Aspen should have been cut 20 years ago. Many people don't appreciate the value of logging on the landscape.

I have nothing clever to put here.

This was a new 40 I picked up- the aspen was 90-100years old and one straight line wind storm from disaster. Some cuts had to be 4’ up to get to the mills max diameter of 28”, the lady I bought it from bought it in 1954, never stepped on the property. When aspen get that old the root system retracts and you won’t get regen- this area should comeback nicely- way overdue

Yes, the deer and grouse will love it and you should get great morel mushrooms for a few years too. The last time I had some of mine logged I traded some stumpage money for heavy equipment work building roads, grubbing stumps and digging a pond.

It was interesting to see that every hard maple that was cut showed evidence that they were tapped way back when, also found a horseshoe when we were roughing the new road.

Used to love to come to Wisconsin grouse hunting. The cut popple was the best hunting IMHO.

Few will realize the benefit of doing TSI.
When planned out the right way, it can be phenomenal for the wildlife.

The popple logs look very good for being well beyond suggested harvest years. It is absolutely amazing to me how many aspen seeds there must be in the soil in these forested areas that get cut and opened to the sun. Another advantage of good forest management is the practices that not only create more wildlife habitat and food is the huge increase in biomass growth each year in the younger plant growth.

Actually, there probably arent many seeds at all. When the parent trees are cut, suckers grow out of the established root system...spurred on by the warming of the ground from sunlight

The amazing thing about the Aspen regeneration is every sucker from the root system is an identical clone of the original host tree

Oldest known living organism on Earth is a Quaking Aspen stand. They figure the original root system is 80,000 years old.

Here’s a TSI I did 3-years ago, 40 acre clear cut, we grid out all our shooting lanes before logging and create predictive deer movement between ag fields and kill plots. We grouse hunt so all trails and lanes are seeded with, clovers: medium red, ladino, balansa fixation and alsike. Screening, bedding and highly digestible browse… every species benefits from young forest growth.

Do the wolves run those lanes?

My favorite part about doing a cut was the amazing amount of non game species that show up. I really enjoy the diversity of birds.

Yes… we don’t have a high concentration of wolves, it’s bad north of us so just a matter of time. I believe there’s a correlation (not necessarily a drawback) to food plotting and creating predation efficiency. I think that when we create trail systems and plots, we increase the propensity from opportunistic to calculated predation. I’m seeing more and more camera pics where I see yotes and deer present in the same frame and then just yotes in the next. I’m starting to design my plots with whitetail exit strategies in mind.
