What issues should I anticipate when putting a suppressor on the ar platform?
Their 100% stock rifles never even fired as I won them and normally just shoot the bolt guns because of how and what I hunt.
So needless to say I know nothing really about AR type rifles.

Want to set one up for coyotes this year.

Do they adjustable gas blocks? If so, lowest setting.

Lower your expectations for how quiet it will be if you aren't shooting subs.

All of my ARs are suppressed. It helps a lot but they're not quiet. I swap out buffers and adjust gas and it helps a bit. And some other minor tweaks.

Have fun. Suppressed is the way to go.

what gas system? gas length?

unless you get a flow through can you get a bunch more gas back so you be prepared to go adjustable gas block it you find it too over gassed
flow through cans make less back pressure but don't get the DB ratings , although nothing 5.56/223 is really quiet just less blast
if it is already carbine it may very well be over gassed as they start gas heavy.

Typically Ars are over gasses to start with. Adding a suppressor increases this. depend on the severity it could be just more gas in your face to increasing the cycling rate and causing malfunction. That could range from the bolt opening to fast before pressure has dropped and case Is still expanded and the extractor ripping through the case rim or slipping off for failure to eject. Or the bolt velocity could be so fast the bolt moves faster than mag spring can push up fresh rounds and you get fail to feed . those are wost cases. normally it's just more gas on your face coming out from the charging Handel and some irritation.

The fix to start is an adjustable gas block so you can reduce the amount of gas getting into the gas system. You can play with heavier recoil springs and buffer tube weights as well but Typically an adjustable gas block if the easy fix.

You will be disappointed suppressing an AR in 5.56. after a mag your ears will still ring. the platform sucks to suppres and the round is loud. the suppressor only helps with muzzle blast a little . You will enjoy your suppressor much more on a bolt gun.

Going with a piston instead of direct impingement will spare you a bit of gas in the face. But, as others have stated, the port pop is still pretty loud on the AR platform.
I found suppressing the AR’s isn’t very satisfying compared to results from other hosts.

It will be fine for your ears, but the bullet breaking the sound barrier makes a crack farther out. I like an AR suppressed more than without for sure. If you feel the bolt is slamming back too hard you can put an adjustable gas block on it easily. Look it up on Youtube, easy to do. Most have a set screw that you screw in to regulate how much gas comes out of the port in the barrel and back toward the bolt and carrier in the gas tube.

I suggest you shoot it first and decide from there. You could potentially run into cycling issues.

I’ve got a LOT of suppressed rounds through a “nothing fancy”, pure stock, “cheap” AR with zero issues other than it’s a dirty dirty little pig in real short order.

That being said, an adjustable gas block is a quick, easy (and cheap) fix that has a pretty profound effect.

You can also change out the charging handle to one of the gas dispersing varieties.

Weighted buffer tubes and speciality springs (or, “suppressor optimized buffers”) can further “enhance” the suppressed AR.

I just run it.

No matter what you do, a suppressed AR is gonna be a dirty dirty little pig.
