When I was a kid we used to have ONE town bum. Everyone called him Gabby. He would ask everyone for a quarter. Now they are on all the corners. They stand there looking pathetic with their cardboard signs and then they walk over to the gas station where there car is parked and leave and switch out with another sheister. There’s an operation going on and I’d like to throttle anyone I see giving them anything.

Ours was named Buster. I don’t remember him ever asking/begging for anything. He pushed his bike all over town filling his baskets with pop bottles for the return. As kids we’d always say “Hi Buster!” Whenever we saw him. He would always answer “Hello kiddies!”
Not a sign but related. After I retired as a commercial real estate appraiser and moved I decided to sell real estate. My mentor said do something so people will remember you. Every Realtor up here had business cards with their photos proclaiming their professionalism, warranted or not. I had cards printed wearing camo with no mention of real estate. Instead mine said " Will hunt, fish and trap for food". A very few were offended and I didn't want to work with them anyway. All remembered and saved my card. 10 years after fully retiring people I don't recognize still come up to me and say they remember me and my business card. It was a very successful second career.

I miss that ol bum.
We had one everybody called Pockets. The front of his bib overalls and coat pockets were always full of pens, coins, and whatever else he found while walking around town. He never asked for anything and lived in an old shack. Even as a kid I wondered how he survived. When he finally died his obituary said he was once a successful businessman who chose to be a society drop out. I just remember a kind old man shuffling around town with his walking stick.

We called ours "Spuds" but I have no idea what his name was. He was somewhere between 40-800 years old but for $1 he would go buy us a 12 pack. When you were in High Scholl that was a good guy to know!
I have nothing clever to put here.

Years ago, was in a McDonalds.......bum came in.......took off a neckerchief.........dipped it in a mop bucket, then proceeded to wash his face with it........put it back on his neck.......then came over to ask me for money. Said I didn't have any cash. No problem....... he would take credit card or personal check with two forms of ID. Then seeing stupid look on my face smiled and drifted off. Good life or tough life? May depend on the day.
Was in KC a few weeks back........gas light came on so had to stop in dodgy area........noticed a guy laid out on the parking lot by a dumpster about 30 feet from the pumps. Was either asleep or dead. Couldn't tell which and didn't want to find out. The scary part was that seemed normal....as much a part of the landscape as the dumpster.

Latest around here is a Mexican playing an accordion with his "wife" and 2 little kids with a sign, "Hard times, please help"
Entertains in supermarket parking lots.
This must be some national thing. We have the mom and several daughters making the rounds playing grocery store parking lots with a violin hooked into an amp and speaker. I'm figuring if you can afford the instrument and the electronics, maybe you aren't that hard up?

I have considered dressing up like a homeless bum and standing by an off ramp by the interstate just to see how much money they can get in a day. If I ever do it the money will go to a charity like St Judes Hospital or similar.

That one actually shows some initiative. Like some street musicians playing for tips.

That's one good thing about all using credit cards now. "I don't have any cash on me bud!" It won't be long til the homeless start using cubes and venmo.
No joke, last summer I saw beggars in Stockholm with card readers.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I have poultry husbandry books written 100 years ago. One of worst "predators" to deal with back then was humans. They stole more chickens than varmints did.
Ain't nobody here but us chickens?

I’d like to stand a few feet beyond a panhandler in clean and presentable clothing with a sign that says “Will work HARDER for LESS food” and see how long it takes for him to leave.
