I got potentially a once in a lifetime bird last night.
I was tickled pink to say the least!

Always fun to do something you never did before However I always say if it happened once there is a greater chance it will happen again due to your prior experiences The only way to find out if it was a once in a lifetime event is to keep after them until you at completely convinced you will not get any more or better yet get some more

Only once in a lifetime if you never hunt for them. If you go hunt for them, then they’d be an everyday bird. Congrats! Is it a once in a lifetime for your area?

Decent pocket of rails in my area. They are almost exclusively Sora rail, however, and this was my first Virginia rail. HOWEVER, I think my fiancé managed to capture one on camera walking around in the reeds behind us while duck hunting last weekend.

On a serious note they are much like a woodcock.

I think pretty similar to dove. I cook my rails and snipe together with the doves and can't tell the difference (other than a rail breast is like the size of a sparrow).
The Virginia rail is going to make a trip to the taxidermist.

Really hoping to bag a woodcock here in Nebraska this year. There are spots they stop "supposedly" in our state. I've never seen one ever anywhere in person.

Also see the ND location. Can't wait to be up there in a month. Love that little yearly trip. Upland and waterfowl paradise.

Those are so thick around here we kill them with sticks. We just walk into a marsh thicket and begin a swingin, blindly. You have to know when to quit, lest you go over your limit. We call them marsh hens round here.
We musta you up a bunch of lifetimes for a bunch of fellers I reckon.
