Logger Yes , my issue is they always drop while trying to get it exactly how I want it to be. I would like to hold them up until I set the treadle rod. One wrong move and down they come. Grrrr Then I have to free both hands and start all over.
Thinking about something like safeties on conibear. Bungee cord is working But wanting a permanent addition.
Surely I can't be the only one who has this problem ? Hopefully I explained my issue

Flip the trap over let the door drop open hold door open flip back over then set. Not wild about a set type safety unless it’s only when you're holding it in place it’s just inevitable it will be forgotten and critters will be lost.

Really the simplest thing to do is the grip safety idea, my old dekalb traps had it. It swings down and catches the door and holds it up so you can play with the triggere.
Problem is making sure it can't swing down after you set the trap preventing the door from closing.

Sniper Bob Any pics of your safety idea ? Was thinking about those spring latches on rabbit cages.
Law dog. Yes it's that simple But I'm always trying to tweak after placing the trap, and Boom there it goes. Lol

In my cages I file a notch where the 2 rods touch mostly because of the winds we get here they can be relentless at times. I cut the excess rod off so a little remains past the notch this allows me to use the notch on windy days when needed and a bit of rod to set the triggers lightly when needed.
A chainsaw file works the best for a round smooth notch

Thx Law Dog I may try one and see if I like it. Should help some when they try to drag. Or climb on top. I may like that one 😁

My problem is not the door closing. It's the lock rings dropping prematurely. As long as the lock rings stay up I can reopen the door easily.
GRrrr

Im just wondering about your technique.
You should be able to: Rotate trap upside down so rings and door fall down and the door opens. Grab trap and door with one hand. Grab dog with the other. Rotate Trap upright. Engage dog with door.
He does that then he wiggles the trap and the door falls. Why I say keep the door in your hand until you have the trap fully positioned.
