So it is a given that the VP is the 'president' of the Senate, and is the one who verifies the election results, does that not constitute a conflict of interest ?

Absolutely true! But, does anybody think it will recuse herself?

The senate and the house, in a joint session, verify the election, not the VP. The VP just presides over the count and announces the results.

Objections can be made in writing, and must be signed by BOTH 1/5th of the senate members and 1/5th of the house members.

Nixon presided over the joint assembly that confirmed the vote in the Nixon-Kennedy contest of 1960.

There were reports of fraudulent counts out of West Virginia and Chicago plus a slate of alternate electors from Hawaii in that cycle.

Most historians are of the opinion that there was indeed questionable vote totals that swung it to Kennedy.

Nixon was urged to and considered challenging but decided not to.
