I’m still a kid so if I admit to the dumb things I could possibly get in trouble so I will leave it at that

As a 12 year old kid with my throwing arm in a cast, I threw rocks at a moving train using my other arm. My last rock went through one window of the cabosse and out a window on the other side. The conductor assumed I shot at him. Detectives came and I confessed. I had a pellet pistol. Had to prove to the detective that a .22 short would not chamber into a .177 pellet pump pistol. It was just after Christmas and my grandmother had given me $25. Gave that to the detective to pay for the two windows. Never again. Only trouble I have been into in 78 years.

My best friends parents and mine got together and bought us a shotgun shell reloader. We were 12!! We loaded everything from rock salt, metal shavings, BB’s, and ball bearings. How we didn’t blow up a barrel or kill ourselves is beyond me. Heck, we’d use minimal powder with the rock salt and have wars with it. Metal shavings were used to shoot rats in the barn. We shot ducks with the BB loads. We even killed a deer with the ball bearings. Believe it or not we both still have the same shotguns and they still shoot as good as the day we got them! What were our parents thinking???

I have a 12 year old that has the same dumb ideas that I had at that age but I have found out he can talk me into being a part of the same stuff. It was fun then and still is. I may be getting to old but it keeps me young.

I decided that a ways away neighbor’s peacock needed to be dissuaded from pecking a bloody spot on a chicken. They were in a chain link fence, and my buddy and I were out on a slingshot adventure and I said “im going to get that peacock to leave that poor chicken alone!” I lined up my slingshot with a diamond hole in the fence, aimed right broadside and let a rock fly. My aim must have been messed up by the fence refraction or something, amd that rock hit the peacock right upside the head and set it to flopping the death flop. We both watched for few seconds till it stopped, and my buddy looked at me with wide eyes and said something similar to “POOP MAN, you killed it!” And with that he turned and ran into the woodlot not to be seen again until the next day. Eventually he told someone who told someone and so on until the neighbor found out. She confronted me and told me if I still wanted to be allowed to fish the lakeshore on her property I had to collect the chicken eggs while she was on vacation. I agreed, and she made sure to leave a lot of rotten eggs. It was bad, but I knew it could have been worse if she told my dad, which she never did.

My buddy lived across from a juniorr college foot ball field. There were hundreds of 1 ft square windows in the upper part of the wall under the bleachers. In his his yard was an apricot tree and they were green. Stupid me said to stupid him I bet I can hit one of those windows. Well when it was all said and done there were over 20 windows broken. Next day knock at his door and we ended up paying for all of those windows. That was my first experience with the term LABOR, MATERIALS, OVERHEAD AND PROFIT.

Swinging out over hollers on muscadine vines. Watched little brother go sailing out deep into the holler when the vine gave way.

Ha, was just talking about this the other day.

Not so much dumb things I did on my own, but dumb things our elders let us do, like Wanna Be's post.

I guess I was around 7 years old when I started helping my grandfather cut wood. We'd go down the mile or so behind the house to get the trees on his old Model A John Deere widowmaker tractor. Hook 2-3 trees up behind the tractor on a logging chain, and then I'd ride home standing on the swinging 3 point hitch bars, holding onto the back of the seat. Small wonder I never fell off and died.

Then when we'd get home, I'd be handed an axe and split all the rounds as he chainsawed them off the tree. Imagine people would go to jail today for letting a 7 year old wield an axe!

My older brothers catapulted me out of the willow tree on the tank dam when I was about 4 years old. Broke my arm. They were so scared of my dad that they took me to the neighbor's house.
My mom told me that when she asked me what happened, I said that "they counted to one, two, free too fast"

BB gun fights below the waist with the neighbor kids. Didn't want to put an eye out. Them things hurt. My dad would have tanned my hide if he would have found out. I told him about it years ago. He said it was a good thing he never found out.

We had a crabapple tree in our yard and I would throw them at the cottontail rabbits that would come into the yard. It was fun watching them jump straight up into the air when I came close with the apple. One day I hit one in the head and killed it. I never did it again I felt so bad.
