Anyone planning on running a raccoon line this year? What’s your strategy? Conibears?
Dp’s ? Woods trapping or ditch trapping? What are your plans? Thanks in advance.

Yes but will be alongside my coyote line

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I'll run a line like usual! Mostly pocket sets at bridges with some dry land sets along the route.

If you're gonna trap, do it because that's who you are. Not because of how much money you're going to make. There's no profit in coon trapping today, don't waste a pelt, don't trap early to beat the next guy because, he's just not there anymore, and early pelts will REALLY disappoint!!

Already got some DP's set at the ranch. I have been getting a few of them masked bandits.

I set for beaver, but always throw in some coon sets anytime I’m close to water.

Why do I carry 10mm? Because shooting twice is just silly.

You guys are CRAZY (like us all). This is the year to experiment with different ideas, methods and tools. We have a sought after coon here but I am pretty set in my harvest routine and even at 6.00/ carcass (last year's December coons) I don't try to "go get them". I will catch some at beaver colonies and cattle feedlots doing some ADC but that is the extent of my plans. Dragging 20+ pounders up the bank on purpose is not my idea of enjoyment in today's price world. Reminds me of the late 60's when we hated coons and to catch one. Fur prices were average 3 - 4 lb muskrats - $1.25 and 20+ lb coons were - $0.75. In 1970 coons went to $3.00 so you can make that call. Are any of you guys old enough to remember that? .............................the mike

I’m so old I remember 3 prices on put up rats. .25, .50, .75. I wasn’t old enough to drive but gas was .20 a gallon. Perspective, large prime rat would fetch 3.5 gallons of gas.

Wife, at $6 a coon they were so easy to stack up last year. And, coon we’re at least moving. Nobody would touch our coyotes south of I-80 here in SE Nebraska. I remember in down years selling a lot of sub $1 rats finished. I’ll take $6 coon all day long. That’s a bonus against the fuel prices for sure!
Having a good coon and waiting until after Thanksgiving to get better quality are key..
We have a jillion around here. Easy to catch.
I plan to hit them a little on side while pursuing other species. Coon always help prop up the fur check, proven for mine anyway for 40+ years of trapping predators. I never pass up coon setting opportunities.
This season will be upping it a bit even more than last years.

Jim
