while it doesn't specify public land and I don't know where they were at. if they state it for private I expect the same to be for public.
(b) On private land, the landowner, lessee or occupant of the land, or any other person with permission of the landowner, lessee or occupant may shoot and kill any gray wolf or cougar in the act of killing, wounding or biting a domestic animal. Shootings shall be reported within 24 hours to a department conservation warden. The carcass of the wolf or cougar shall be turned over to the department.
Wis. Admin. Code Department of Natural Resources NR 10.02 He was protecting himself, not livestock so this does not apply to him. In addition, he would be committing a crime if he had shot a wolf that was attacking livestock. Remember once they were listed again, only exception to kill them is self defense.

Too bad this wasn't covered under mandatory Hunter Ed, so all you guys that had it, could educate us uneducated. I was hoping someone that hadn’t wasted their time taking WI hunters ed could have enlightened us…

WI law is a little different in how it doesn't define a lot of things.
it would be illegal to kill a wolf for any reason with the exception of NR 10.02 a land owner/lessee exception while the wolf is in the act of harming livestock on private property. It is my understanding that you still can't kill a wolf that is killing your hunting dog on public land and why the DNR keeps paying for dogs.
however the prohibition on killing a wolf would be found unconstitutional as it applies to your self defense because your right to defense be it human , bear, cougar , or wolf can not be trumped by the legal protections on that person, bear , cougar or wolf.
it leaves it to a case by case decision not allowing an exception for self defense in the written law. but since your right to self defense is greater than the prohibition on killing a thing that you believe to be about to cause you death or great bodily harm.
thus the prohibition on killing a wolf is unconstitutional as it apples to your situation.
much the same way the prohibition on carrying concealed used to be found un-constitutional as it allied to specific events. such as the pizza delivery guy who was jumped as he was getting out of his car, he drew his illegally loaded and concealed handgun from his belt under his jacket. he fired and stopped the attack. because the law could not have been followed that at the time required him to transport the gun unloaded and encased , out of reach. he could not have retrieved the gun from the trunk , loaded it and then proceeded to make the pizza delivery. without having first been robbed and his life threatened with a weapon. this and several cases very much like it are exactly what lead to the ability to carry a uncased and loaded handgun in a vehicle in WI with no license by all adults that are not prohibited people. it also prompted the state legislature to adopt a shall issue CCL system for concealed handgun carry.
and allow long guns to be carried uncased in a vehicle within reach so long as they are unloaded
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

It’s pretty simple really. Are they not protected in WI? Of course you’d have to report it. Self defence is OK too. https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/wolf#:~:text=Wolves%20are%20listed%20as%20federally,one%20of%20the%20numbers%20below Stupid link doesn’t work.

Greencountypete, I don’t think that is the case. When they are on the list, you can only shoot one for human safety concerns. Killing for livestock is only available when they are delisted. Here is an article about the three cases in the last year that deal with human safety. Notice they do not say it is required to report. It says they voluntarily reported the incident. If they were required, it would say it. When DNR has authority, they are quick to throw it around. Wolves-Human Safety

Well he did the right thing. There were at least 3 witnesses and It would have got out In no time and then that young man would have been In real trouble. He wouldn’t have been in any more trouble if he hadn’t reported it, if he was not required to do so.

Excuse me but, it seems like reporting an incident like this, legally required or not, would be in everyones best interest. I am sure there will be plenty of reports stating how "this behaviour is uncommon", but it is factual that wolves can at times be aggressive towards humans. Why would anyone want to hide that? How soon we forget our history…. Do you remember what they tried to do to Kyle Rittenhouse? If it wasn’t for all the folks filming, they would have hung him. How much you think he spent in legal fees? If I can walk away without anyone knowing, I’ll take that every time over the small gain politically you might receive from telling the story. This kid didn’t have that as an option so he did the next best thing. Get out in front of the story before they start painting you into a corner.

If he killed it with steel bird shot, it had to be close. It's hard enough to kill ducks with that junk. Isn't that the truth.
As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.
