That's the biggest I've seen. It looks like a small hedge apple.

Some of those trees you need a hardhat to walk under it.

That would hurt getting hit by that.

Is the nut also large? I have a few trees that give large walnuts, but the nuts are normal size

Without knowing what it was, my first guess would have been a hedge apple.

My neighbor and I would LOAO when a Walnut would fall and hit my tin barn roof. BAM! "A sure sigh of fall"! LOL

I have a young tree with a few nuts on it , this year. What is the best way to plant them and have them grow. Can I pick the nuts now . or do I have to wait till they fall.? Afraid the squirrels might grab them. We don't have many walnut trees in this area. old243

I just was looking into growing chestnuts. From what I read, take a 5 gallon bucket and cut a big hole in the bottom, put 1/4 inch metal screen or mesh in the bottom. layer of sand, nuts, sand, nuts, as many as you want to plant. dig a hole, put bucket in the hole with the lid flush with the ground. pour a gallon of water in and put lid on. In spring pull it out and the nuts should have sprouted a root. Plant each in a pot. No idea if it will work for walnuts.

The worms only eat the husk. They don't damage the nut meat.

I've cracked many thousands of black walnuts. I have a G. Gardner Master Nutcracker and 2 Duke knockoffs of it. In my experience, the biggest nuts typically have thicker shells and only an average amount of nut meat. Some of the really small nuts also have a medium amount of nut meat and thin shells, making them easier to crack and get the meat out of. Some trees produce much better nuts for eating then others.

Black walnuts, once the husk is off, can be stored in the shell for at least 9 years without any degradation of nutritional value. You could live off of black walnuts for months, in an oh crap situation.

I'm going to plant several hundred black walnuts in air pruning beds this Fall, to sell as trees next Fall on.

Squirrels plant plenty of nuts that sprout for me. Find a spot that you want a tree in and stomp one or 2 into the ground, after they fall.
