Any of you ever use filson jackets / coats? My dad has wanted a “Filson type jacket” for years, but could never afford one. Been thinking about getting him one. Anyone tried Filson as well as something else? Pros / cons would be appreciated.

When I was younger, I loved my Filson 'Packer' (caped) oil tin cloth coat. It kept me dry regardless what the weather was outside. Durable, heavy, stiff; a great hunting/outdoorsman coat it could go up against anything. It's a shame I grew out of it, handed it down to my son; still going strong! They're a bit more pricey than they were back them.

It's like their slogan says " may as well have the best " or that's my slogan for their products .

My Filson garments are old stock so to speak before they were sold off so the quality may vary but I've seen them offer different coats on sale on line and not knowing which coat you're looking at its tough to advise you .

So my suggestion is to bite the bullet and give them a try I'm glad I did many years ago .

You're friend along the snare line .

I have a Filson heavy wool coat that is similar to the old-style Woolrich hunting coats. It is insulated and has a Dry-Plus lining. I've had it for many years. It's one of my favorite cold-weather deer hunting coats. It's too heavy and warm to wear on days your active but perfect for sitting on stand.

I also have a Tin Cloth upland game vest that's holding up well for almost twenty years.

But, I'm on my third pair of tin cloth (single tin) brush pants in the last twenty years. They are not as durable as they claim.

Eh...wot?

I have a Filson mackinaw cruiser, haven’t worn it in years.
Very heavy, best used horseback. Get into rain or snow and it gets a whole lot heavier. Fast.
Warm yes. Good quality, of course it’s a Filson.
These days it’s amazing the materials that are lighter and warmer.

Don’t have a jacket, but have their chaps and they’re basically indestructible.

Wool or one of the tin cloth types?

Have both and they last.
Filson wool vests are also nice and warm.

Tin cloth takes years to break in, it is stiff if wax coated.

I had a tin cloth strap shoulder game vest I used for years when running NSTRA trials and rabbit hunting. it was great and I'm disappointed I can't find it. it must have been lost in a move.

Near as I can tell the only place you’re going to buy Woolrich anymore is EBay or a thrift store. Guess they went out of business. But yes, anything made by Filson is excellent.
