I don’t pretend to know enough about the subject and am impartial relative to unions. My number 1 worry in all of this is it fast tracks more automation. I’m hopeful these men and women don’t price themselves out of jobs before the next contract down the line.
Could go that way even without automation. If stuff starts being made here competitively those ships won’t be coming to ports, no ships, no need for dock workers.
But then they can at least find a job here if they are are not all filled with illegals.
Another thing it's likely a raise od x % each year over the corse of the contract not all at once. Ours was 4.3, 4.5, 4.1 oor similar each year of the contract . each year compounded the Rais of the last and looking at the Raise over the 4 or 5 year contract it sounded much larger than being honest and saying it was a 4.5% rase each year.
yes it's a large Raise. Did they loose health care coverage, have a large increase in out of pocket health care cost that will come out of that Raise and not go to their check.
for years we took smaller raises to keep our Healthcare coverage the same. Then the company wants to hang it so heck yes now Your going to pay more on the check.
There is a lot more to it than just the total compounded Raise over the full term of the contract. yes that's a large # and used for shock factor for those that can't think lime the liberal democrats.
if they price themselves out of a job that's their choice. Cause and effect its happend before and will again.
BC yes things are better now because of unions. Get rid of them and thing will just go backwards. So few shops are union any more and non-union shops pay pretty well and have ok benefits ofter very close to unions. Have you asked yourself why? Because they compete for the same labor force and have had to step up the pay and benefits to get workers r to work for them instead of quiting to go to the union plant for more pay and better benefits.
