So for those we've been able to use a few different ones from the last 20 odd years , what's y'all's favorite? And asking for the last 20 odd years because their easier to get then the older stuff lol Only really every got to use the newer light fighter set up and I liked it alot due to size and weight but wanted to see what eveyone elses thoughts are . Looking hard at getting one of the older ICS tents but only got to use that version like twice. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/10/full-34110-231431-6ffdf3ec30ca5873ef09f0716c2ce28d.jpg)

I know your short but not much room in there for your wife.
why not just a 4 part sleep system? last time the boys wanted to camp out it was higs in the 29s and lose near zero. in the middle of the night I had to un zip my bags due to sweeting and was thinking the heavy one alone would have been fine . I started to believe the 39 below rating after that.
I have one of the green ones with aluminum frame with stove jack, roll up screen windows clear plastic that can roll down covering the screen and moanothe tent material cover that rolls down and blocks out all light.. it's 16' x 16" Nad you can daddy more sections to increase length as long as you want and have sections for.

yes the military sleep system. it's a light weight sleeping bag for warm weather , heavy bag for cold, they go inside each other for really cold. it has a gortex bag for a cover to go over what ever bags your using to keep you dry and all fits inside a compression bag so smashes down nice and small and fits in the bottom of a large ruck wit room to spare.
besides misquotes what's a thin tent going to protect you from? Rain , condensation, dew , and most other forms of atmospheric liquid. Also got horse files ,deer flies , random nosy critters ....wve wok up with a possums nose in your face ? Been there don't that lol. O and fire ants buy fires ants are fun Not to mention the weather down here is so bipolar one day you need a jacket next night you wanna be sleeping in you underwear. And as far as the sleep system I actually still have the one I was issued, actually still sleep in it every night.....yes I know I'm very odd but look on the boat it's a lot less of a pain then 3 comforts and all this other jazz....not to mention their nice for hotels , and no before you ask I don't sleep in it when I'm at home.....at least when me and the wofe are in bed , now when I'm in my own room

I really like my poncho liners a ton also. bought a lot of 110 of them off government liquidations among other things one year. they ranged from new to perfectly broken in.

Wolfie, you are spot on wanting a tent for camping in the south, for exactly the reasons you listed (and mice and snakes). I think the milsurp tents are similar to civilian models but heavier in weight and probably a lot lighter on the wallet. Kuiu, Seek Outside, Stone Glacier are some of the high end tent mfgs. REI is another to look at for price comparisons. Note: High end means good construction, top end materials, light weight designs, and all that cost $. Us older guys have more discretionally income to get the lighter options and less ability to carry the extra lbs. Material improvements in the past 10 years or so have lightened tents and tarps while retaining strength, durability, and water proof ratings. Regardless, one of my sons is still using a tent I bought in the early 90s.

Had a poncho and a thin liner in the 'Nam, worked great! Still have them. Got a "Jungle Hammock" in the 'Nam too. worked great. Still have it. Bought a Timberline free standing A frame back packing tent with a vestibule. Worked great and still have it.
