I have a client whose dryer vent is on the roof. A flyer came down and chewed out into the living space. It’s been removed and I’d like to address the vulnerability but not sure the best way to do so. Anybody ever modify a Heartland dryer vent closure for a roof application? Just not sure what type of hood would stay clear of lint? Any suggestions?

I wasn’t familiar with the name so I I googled it. The video I watched claimed it was rodent proof. Maybe your client’s vent malfunctioned?

I’m not sure I’d want to use screening of any type where it’d be hard to clean out. It seems you could be opening yourself up to some liability incase of fire.

Is that even code? How high above the roof shingles does it go? Would it be buried under snow? What was the reason it was installed that way?

I have no idea why it was installed that way. There are multiple townhome developments in that neighborhood that all vented the dryers out of the roof. It just terminated at a hood like a bath fan would have, with the flapper removed. I’m thinking I could put a 1” x 1/2” oversized wire mesh screen (think like an attic vent cage) around it and the wind would keep the lint clear. I’d leave several inches around the hood to make sure any lint can get away from the vent. Not sure what else to do?

Eaten,I’ve had good luck with those vent closure and do believe they are largely rodent proof. I was wondering about using the canister part of the heartland vent on the roof modifying it to sit on a straight pipe instead of a 90 degree elbow as typically used.
