Is it too thick to make work gloves? I just shot a bull, and would like to get the hide tanned and then gloves made. What’s the path of least resistance for either (gloves or hair off tanning)?

Here he is.

I used to send moose hides to a glove place in MN. (OK, like a 1/2 or 1/3 of a moose hide!) I've had a ton of gloves and mitts made of moose hide. They shave the leather down anyway. Makes terrific gloves/mitts.

I know this place used to be popular then shut down but opened back up a couple years ago.
I got an elk this fall and in hindsight wish I would have made one more trip to get the hide, but we wouldn’t have had room for it in the freezer and I didn’t plan ahead and bring salt. Next time I’ll have a plan!!

Congrats on the beauty moose! Happy trapping! ScottW

Congratulations!

I have a pair of choppers that are over 40 years old. I just wear the for ice fishing.

They are excellent.

Factory tanned moosehide makes good mitts.
Native smoke tanned moosehide is far superior if you can get it done,or do it yourself.
It is expensive to buy.
Factory tanned moosehide can be split to whatever oz weight you want.
Thinner for gloves thicker for mitts or mukluks.
Factory tanned moosehide has a lot of stretch to it-you will want to block it some to take out the excessive stretch before getting gloves mitts etc made.

What does blocking entail?

Wetting the tanned leather, stretching it a bit and letting it dry before patterning and cutting.
If you are getting them made by someone you can block the leather before giving it to them or ask them if they will do it.

I think it is Century Leather Products, as thrstyunderwater suggests. But it has been a while!
