For years, in Tennessee, we were required to use rubber jaw traps for land trapping. I have never used the Duke rubber jaw but for several years I used Victor rubber jaw #3 traps and if they have good springs, they'll hold every coyote or bobcat that steps in them. They require a bit of extra maintenance such as occasionally needing to replace the pads as they will get torn. If a skunk sprays a rubber jaw, you'll never get the scent off the trap without replacing the pads. Some guys remove the pads when waxing the traps; I never did. If you do start using the padded jaw traps have a supply of extra pads and extra screws. I understand that you asked about Duke; not Victor.

I also have no experience witht he dukes, but do have about 7 dozen victor rubber jaws. I have started to use the JC conner pads for them and they seem much less prone to getting tore up than the victor rubber, but time will tell. I think dukes have a similar soft rubber as the victors

I have exactly one No.3 duke with rubber jaws, and caught exactly one coyote with it,not exactly a experts opinion here. While I m not much on 4 coiling I did 4 coil this one because the stock springs seemed awful weak.It held a large male just fine.I do like the Victor rubber jaw attachment better than Dukes, after 1 coyote the padding had worked its way loose so I pulled it.I wouldn't be afraid to use this style again.

Sorry for the delayed reply but I have read them all and I appreciate each of you giving your opinion. I prefer not to use them but they may get me access to properties I wouldnt get otherwise.

I’m not familiar with the duke #3 padded jaw, but looked like they use same fame and setup as the oval shaped standard #3! and I ran several of them on my coyote line over the years. Worked OK for first season or two but the stock springs weakened over time and I’ve replaced most of them. They hold coyotes but be sure to test springs after a few seasons. If padded jaws get you onto a place then good for you to find a compromise with landowners and use a tool they are comfortable with.
Maybe four coiling these would help too?
I found some sort of step down type set worked best with the dukes to make sure you get a full weight commitment and bury the foot in well each catch. They held fine when I started doing that.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
