Very true. And replacing Glorfindel with Arwen in that scene opened an avenue for an emotional plea that didn't exist in the book.

For those who have watched the movies and aren't familiar with the Christianity in LoTR, Tolkien uses Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn as pictures of Christ. Frodo the sin-bearer, who goes the way of the cross to destroy the ring/sin. Gandalf who dies and is resurrected, having defeated the old fiery foe, the devil. Aragorn, the hidden king of kings.

As to the original question:
The quiz from the first page has me pegged as a dwarf.
I'm probably most like Radagast - supposed to be one of the wise but a bit distracted with love of animals.
Really, I'd most like to be a hobbit.

Tolkien got his idea for writing Lord of the Rings from the world wars that were going on is what I read. I enjoyed all of the movies. Some great special effects and super acting.

Wouldn't say he got the idea for LoTR from the wats but he was heavily influenced by them as he was a horse trainer in WW1 and many of his friends from the Council of London died fighting in it. The Hobbit started as he was bored grading papers and wrote the opening line. In a hole lived a Hobbit. It was a children's book the the publisher asked for a sequel and was a bit shocked at what was delivered.

You're supposed to start them on The Hobbit, which is a much easier read.

I ain't into them myself. I just knew that my future ex-wife was in them and couldn't recall her name. They are both beautiful ladies and look strikingly similiar.

Although I can appreciate Tolkien's talent, I find his writing hard to follow. Maybe if I was into fantasy stuff it would be more attractive to me.

Yeah the Hobbit is definitely for younger kids as it's got a lot of sillyness in it.
