Asian bittersweet is a huge problem in the woods of the eastern US and in many places it grows in the same areas as our native American bittersweet. Had some request for an ID video showing how to tell the two species apart.

Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!

Anthony

I have not seen the asian around here. Native is not plentiful but not uncommon either. I gather it every year for wreaths that we send as Christmas presents. It flourishes when pruned, as long as only the fruiting sections are taken, in fact it grows back better the following year after I gather it. It is also dioecious so some vines will not have berries. They say it is dioecious (male plants and female plants) but I have found berries on plants that I can not locate a male nearby, so I suspect it can be hermaphroditic also.

loosanarrow - Bittersweets can sometimes (but not very often) have either perfect flowers or produce both male and female flowers.
