Hi all,
I've been reading the site the last couple weeks and learning a lot - thanks! I've got some raccoons and opossums causing trouble at a remote property, so I picked up some DP traps Sunday. Since its a 1 hour drive from my house, and Kansas requires daily checks, I'm only putting putting traps where I have internet acessible cameras so I can check daily and only drive when I have something.
I noticed some pics on this site with multiple animals in traps just a few feet away. I wasn't sure how common that was, or how likely it is to get a second after the first trap has something in it. But after seeing the pics here I put some traps close together. I was imagining when a trap goes off, any additional coons there would scatter and maybe come back later. I was wrong. When a trap goes off, even if a coon is feet away watching, it doesn't care.
Last night I watched live 4k video when there were 3 coons at my deer corn feeder. There was already 1 coon in a DP trap. The trapped coon's buddys would come check on it. The free coons didn't seem concerned. It was as if they're trying to figure out why it isn't coming to the corn. A few minutes later, I watched as the second coon got caught in a DP just a few feet from the first and just a few feet from the corn feeder. The coon on the feeder didn't react at all, even though it was watching when the trap went off. Of course the one getting caught is startled and jumps a little, but its peer just feet away watched its buddy get caught then casually turned its head back to the corn.
Obviously DPs should be kept far enough away from each other that they can't get tangled up. But beyond that, it looks like its worth putting several in a hot spot.
