My neighbor was out in Nebraska last fall and his raven blew up when he shot into the ground to unloadhe had bought new bolts and practiced with them when he took it in to a shop he was accused of dry firing it Nope no way then the tech asked to see the pieces and the other bolts wasn't much left but on the rest 2 of the nocks could be twisted easily they were the half moon nocks You're not supposed to shoot a raven to unload it. You take out the bolt and use the crank to back off the string. Too much power. How does a raven know if your shooting to unload it or shooting at a critter, or target?

PF, When were the strings last replaced?
Local bow shop guy says annually is recommended due to the incredible tension.

about two years or so ago. Will need new ones again after this I won't trust them if it's good to go after inspection. But since it an old x bow they will have to be ordered and made. so a few weeks down. did I mention I'm off a month during bow seasion this year currently burning through a two week period now.. I can't be without this thing right now so I will be buying a new one it seems.

Perfect opportunity to get your boy shooting a compound. They have compounds the oldest has shot deer with his. Even though i started off bow hunting at 13 and killed my first several deer withba bow before I ever started gun hunting I now prefer x bow . Why? I don't have time these days to shoot a bow like I did when I was a kid. No movement needed to to draw. And heck it's easier to shoot more accurate. My boys were shooting 3.5" groups with it off a bi pod at 8 years old at 55 yards. Hard to top that.

It surprises me you don't have a backup. But that's not uncommon for the guys I know that shoot compounds and crossbows. They'll have a safe full of deer rifles, but only 1 bow. Not sure why, just odd to me. Replacing cable-string every year or two on one is enough for me so I sold my backup. The meat case at the store is my back up.

Not sure why, just odd to me. well everyone has compounds the boys have 2. they just don't get shot much these days. used to go through a target each month or two. don't get me started on buying arrows when kids are shooting an hour or more a day. Now I don't do any of the deer shooting have not shot one in 5 to 7 years and the last one was because the boys wanted to see me shoot one. not only do I not have a back up x bow I only have one. I have 2 boys hunting so need two. This one will be down if it's OK a few weeks at best so time to go shopping. sadly they no longer make this model. It was not even the fastest back when I bought it but it's more compact in length and width than the older ons were back then and lighter than the new ones out now. I sure don't need the 1500$ + 200 a year for strings 1" 100 yard group capable x bows to shoot them at 50 yards max when a $600 model I like better has been doing it just fine for years. Just realized I have never shot a deer with an x bow. All the kids have but not me.

Looks like it was shot straight down into the ground That's what I said. I agree. I don't think PF is getting the whole story. That bent field tip means it hit something really hard.

That bent field tip means it hit something really hard. yet that would have driven the insert into the shaft not make it come out now wouldn't it. he said the bolt was flipped field point facing him and beside the target. shot from 5 yards or so. Still have not found the fleshing. the flat t spot on the point could have been there I robed it off arrows from their bows so it was not a new field point that has only ever been on the bolt. Once thing I can say is my 14 year old will not lie to me. 12 year old I would question and have to dig it out of him.

got in from looking for sure if a hit my boy shot at this morning. he missed hus cam hit the Rail on the stand at the shot. he had reloaded it after the shot and this happened when he got home switches to field point and shot it to unload again. broke in the same place string jumped cam again. called the mission guy thought the strung had been cut when I told him the string was fine he said only thing he could think of was the bolt not getting seated correctly like was posted above. That's always possible yet I have a hard time with that especially since it happened so close last week and he should be really checking its seated well. add in the boys have been shooting this x bow for years seems odd there would be a problem with them now. But it has been the same boy and we have never had an issue before so it's possible he may be sloppy I just don't think it's likely. could be the thing is 12 years old and developed a small problem also or we got a bad batch of bolts . One other thing the mission guy said wad it's possible the bolts had been shot a lot and just over stressed. At this point I really question trusting it. I was planning on getting another mission similar to it this week so we had 2 but now I'm thinking a 10 point or excalibur. I'm not sure I trust even using this Mission any longer. I will only use the new bolts I picked up this year if we do use it if it checks out at the shop again today.
