Guys, is a mb550 a reasonable trap for bobcat? A fella I help drew a bobcat tag this year and has a bobcat on one of his properties. Really don’t want to use 220s because his dog sometimes gets out of his enclosure.. So we don’t want accidents… I was thinking about the mb550 … because if the dog does get out… and gets caught,, that thicker jaw isn’t going to cause any paw damage… and of course no paw damage to the bobcat if we are successful. He wants a full mount. I don’t really have any other traps other than the 550 that have the thicker jaws..I have a ton of mb650s and #3 Montanas that are certainly wide enough,,, I just don’t have any laminated and I don’t want to use them in case the dog gets caught. He has small children who sometimes leave the door open and the dog gets out…
Bobcats are not an everyday kinda critter for us here in Illinois,,, so my knowledge on trapping them are limited.

Yes, I use two coil closed jaw model for cats and coyotes here, along with Bridger #2 s.
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

The 550 is what used to catch my first bobcat and it worked perfectly. Held cat with no damage to paw/hide.
Great trap

A 2 coil 550 would work great. Cats are easy to hold in a trap. After that 1st jump/lunge....if traps holds then....ya got him.

All I run on the farm. I mainly set for coyotes, but they work just fine for the cats and fox.

KS the 550 is a little narrower than most of my dedicated cat traps, but that's not my issue. I basically hate on any attempt to make a coil spring do the job that a DLS does so much better. A coild spring has levers inside the jaw where I want only pan, a small space, then jaw (the wider the better on the jaw). Guys will modify an over sized pan until it looks like a Freddy Kruger victim giving the levers a place to rise.
And what happens when the do rise? The come thru the pan and push up the paw I want down deep. The ol DLS gives me lots of room for s big pan and even a step down big pan iffin I want.

Makes perfect sense to me. I don't think a lot of guys here in WI use walk through for cats. Mainly dirt holes and cubbies.
