We’ve had our second heavy frost here in my neck of the woods,,,nova , my granddaughter looked out the window as we were getting ready for the school bus and said “ are the persimmons ready now pawpaw??l”
This 7 year old has a remarkable memory for things outdoors related…
And we’ll probably go check out the persimmon trees this Saturday.

I took her ginseng hunting a few weeks back,, she said she wasn’t going to tell anyone at school where the patches are at,,, lol.
She’s really excited about the upcoming season,,, she’s made it abundantly clear that she wants to catch a raccoon.
She’s gotten pretty good at finding arrowheads as well…
I took her out hunting chanterelles and she says those are her favorite mushrooms to find and eat.
I’ll post a pic later,,, I’m in an area of bad signal at the moment [Linked Image]

Oh, that's so great! Sounds like a smart kid. Looking forward to seeing those pictures. My Grandparents fueled the fire of my passion for the outdoors.

I remember my first trip to Colorado,,, the first mountain I ever saw was Cheyenne mountain… I was 10 at the time and had no clue what was in there at the time.
We got to stay on base with my uncle who was a sergeant at the time at fort Carson

My first real hike was, based on the closest one to Cortez (where they lived.) probably the La Plata at 10. Though I can't confirm that location because I was so young. Absolutely changed my life. Got all the way to the top. Core memory stuff right there. smile

taught me about wild crafting, animals, plant identification. Probably even some tracking. It was the best. I'm so glad your granddaughter has that kind of experience, too. Didn't get into fungus until my husband was stationed in Gaylord Mi. Only found a morel like...twice. Lol

Around here if you wait for frost to get persimmons, all you get is fermented ones. Raccoons here Been eating rn since August.

Once they hit the ground here, they're ready . With some exceptions

I don't know of any persimmons in my area at all, except a few that were on a deceased friend's farm, that he planted. I would like to get some seeds.

Small trivial things are what we remember as we get older, dad making a dipper out of a cowcumber leaf as we call them, i recently discovered they are wild magnolia's. Grand father educated me on the 'simmon's by letting me bite a green hard one, pucker plum for sure!

I really like the taste of them. Amazing how many seeds are in one kinda like prickly pear cactus fruit.
