Who makes and maintains the nice trail your ATV is sitting on in the first pic, the timber/paper companies?

Great pics LugNut.

Have been around Ruffs my whole life but not much with Spruce Grouse.

Thanks, but they're not my pics B&B, I got them online. I just wanted to show BvrRetriever the difference.

I've killed a good number of both species in Canada. There's a huge difference in the way Canadian Ruffed Grouse behave compared to the ruffed I hunt here in PA. They are basically tame up there. You just walk along a trail and plink enough for supper with a .22.

Down here they are mostly wild-acting. I hunt them with dogs and they sometimes explode at your feet and you have a few short seconds to make take a shot, they're fast! Or they run out ahead of shotgun range and flush wild. They like to hold up in the nastiest, thickest cover around.

At least that's been my experience.

Eh...wot?

It is an old decomissioned(1960s) logging road,no maintenance other than what I do.Some places look good, but lots of places underwater and old culverts washed out.
A buddy of mine has a camp on Abimatinu lake and he has a small backhoe that he uses occasionally to open an old culvert or clean out the ditches on the first 6 km to where his camp trail cuts off into the bush.
He uses an argo to get to the lake and a skidoo of course in winter.
The old logging road goes in 40 km to the far end of my trapline. Bridge washed away on Abimatinu river so no getting by there until freeze up.

There are thousands of miles of old logging roads in this area of Northern Ontario, some maintainec by trappers.

Luckily no riff raff up there. The couple guys that moose hunt on my trapline have been hunting there for several generations and they respect the land.We have worked together to build and maintain some bike bridges.

went up to cjeck the traps I set yesterday.Picked up 3 beaver and a rat out of 6 traps.
Shot 3 more grouse for supper, and scouted out a couple spots to set later on.Found a huge dam completely across Abimatinu river,That dam is brand new never existed before.Nothing at that spot last year.

Beautiful country and great pics Boco! I hunted ruffed grouse while in college (IU). Those grouse were something else for a rookie small game hunter....surprise the bejesus out of you!
Great tasting white meat! How are the beaver and rats looking? Been nuisance trapping here and the fur is starting to prime up. Season will soon be here and we will ALL be busy.
Good luck!

Don't you ever get tired of explaining how bush travel works and how we are at the mercy of the weather gods?

Isn't beaver country appealing , makes the land interesting and pretty.

The fall adds to the feeling of change and winter soon to come.

Nice shots, Boco.

Found a cool old trail today.
Old trapper used to catch a lot of lynx down that trail,I will check it out this winter on the snowmachine.
Picked up a few beavers and birds today and had to do some quick chopping-beavers are busy.
Teepee set connected at the old culvert.

Oh Man Boco..., the stories that old trail could tell.
It's amazing it's not grown over much.
How old you figger it is?

Probably cut in the 70s
Old trapper maintained it,some. The trails in muskeg spruce dont grow in very much at all.It may be grown over with willow or tag alder further in, I will go for a ride down it this winter.
I dropped that mink box there today and baited it with some grouse scrap.
Will set it in a week or so.
