I do not buy very often, I did not realize until today that they make you pay sales tax on the shipping charge. What a rip-off. I won an item for $15.00 and the shipping was $2.00, they charged me $1.02 sales tax. 6% on $17.00 is $1.02.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I seldom buy anything on there anymore. $2.00 shipping seems really cheap. I didn't think anything shipped was ever that low.
My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".

That is what caught my eye, low shipping charge. The item is very light in weight, the seller is probably mailing it like a letter.

Think that law was passed that sales tax had to be paid on anything from another state , if your state charges sales tax . That happened around 2010 I believe, correct me if wrong, but it was around that time period. Used to be if you bought from a state that didn't charge sales tax , you didn't get charged unless bought within your state. Think about it awhile , and I'll leave it at that.

If you deal with a state more than 20 times the seller is required to collect sales tax the States sued for that since they lost that income on the net.

I'm 68 and still having SS and Medicare withheld from my paycheck. I think that's bull. $140 total withheld from a part-time gig. No wonder nobody wants to work.

Maybe I did not explain things very well. I know I must pay sales tax on the item I am buying, why do I have to pay sales tax on the postage cost too?

Maybe I did not explain things very well. I know I must pay sales tax on the item I am buying, why do I have to pay sales tax on the postage cost too? My guess it was included in the final price charged. I agree you shouldn't be charged sales tax on postage. Then again what aren't you taxed on any more?

I quit selling on ebay because of the law. With ebay fees, pay pal fees, shipping and sales tax, you started losing money right away. Mostly because your product couldn't sell for enough to cover all the charges. My daughter had a very good business on E BAY until the charges and the buyer is always right BS. She sold it , and doesn't deal with E BAY anymore, not sure where she works out of now.

Maybe I did not explain things very well. I know I must pay sales tax on the item I am buying, why do I have to pay sales tax on the postage cost too? You are paying sales tax on shipping because it is considered a service, With few exceptions most products and services are taxed at the state level.

I'm not positive , but E BAY and PAY PAL , are the same company or organization . Now if you're using either you know about ACORN , which is owned by the one and only SOROS! Interesting how it works totally for E BAY and not the seller.

ebay hasn't owned or used PayPal for a long time.
ebay considers what the sale price was AND whatever the seller says is the shipping charge is all one single money ball. They did it primarily after they first were only taking their commission from the sale price but people were selling things cheap BUT charging high shipping costs so were evading paying ebay much. But ebay isn't pure as driven snow either.
I think ebay collects sales take for the state the buyer lives, I pay South Dakota sales taxes out of my costs. All governments are happy and SD government has never audited any of my little sales tax returns (ebay is just one of my micro side gigs that get rolled into a single sale tax return). That also gets recorded on my federal tax return but I seldom make much after expenses so they don't come after me to pay say the full freight of any single proprietor Social Security tax.
It could be a lot worse...

^^I use PayPal every time I use eBay As a buyer, correct...? I should have clarified my post better. When I started selling on ebay in the late 1990s or so, ebay would pay sellers through PayPal. A person would then have to transfer the money from your PP account to your banking account or use it on PP to buy something on ebay or elsewhere. I can't remember when it happened, but if you sell on ebay, they now do direct deposit to you (after taking their cut) via your bank account.
