If you're talking cheap back in day. I always wondered how small cafe's and even bigger places. Could do the $1.99 or there about priced Breakfast Specials and make living? Was usually Coffee, 2 eggs, Toast or Hash Browns, Bacon or sausage. Always seemed to me wasn't much profit in that for what I was getting.

I saw a candy bar on the counter at a truckstop yesterday. Two fifty. When I was a kid they were bigger and cost a dime.
Wife bought a pork belly the other day for 3 something a pound. A quarters worth of salt and smoke from some pecan tree trimmings, I have bacon for less than 4 bucks a pound.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Danny Didn't they use to almost give pork belly away? I don't really know never bought any. I do know that pork hocks used to be pretty cheap. Now they are often more per pound than pork butts. I went yesterday to the school PTO had fundraiser got chicken Q diner. It's interesting how those have changed. Don't seem to long ago you got and box that lid barely closed for $5. Yesterdays 1/2 bird diner was $14. I know it's a fundraiser they gotta make their money. I'm not complaining about it or wouldn't go. Difference is the bird didn't even fill the big side of the carry out box. Spoon full of baked beans, spoon full of potato salad, golf ball size diner roll. Same size carry out box they have always been. Thing is it really is enough food for most people but definitely down sized. Mac "Never Forget Which Way Is Up!"

Restaurants buy their supplies from a wholesaler , I know of an Amish store that buys from such a place. In the colder weather , they pass out a flier that the community can take advantage of things like butter, bacon, cheeses dry goods like beans, crackers, flour canning supplies. They make up a very large order and get a discount . Used to get butter at $ 1,85 a pound, bacon was around $ 2.50 a pound , but you had to buy 30 pounds. Check out bulk supplies for prices, but you need a wholesale/retail license to buy from a wholesaler. I buy a lot of things at their store, only problem is things that need refrigeration is limited. You need to pick it up the day of delivery .

I saw a candy bar on the counter at a truckstop yesterday. Two fifty. The gas stations around here get 2 for $5. If you buy one , it is about $3.29 or more. This has only made me buy online by the box at about $1-$1.25 each.
