I had read somewhere, I can’t remember where, that if a coon was caught on a drowner ,,, other raccoon in the vicinity when a particular raccoon went down,, will steer clear of the area… I don’t know if this is true or not,,, anyone else ever heard of this? It’s been a very long time ago when I read it. Ive never personally seen any evidence that supported this.

The only time I've seen Raccoons shy from others being cought was in very low populations. In alot of the desert that I trap, it's rare to catch doubles or even more than one at the same set. I experienced this in AZ back in the 80s as well. I have very little experience with downers. When the population is high they become very competitive. In Iowa I cought 13 coon in the same trap in consecutive nights, twice. Both times were at the mouth of a culvert.

Sounds like something someone wrote to keep competitors from gang setting

I actually had great luck putting them on drowners and getting many multiple catches when gang setting good locations. I’d say drowner or not gang setting always good for coon locations and multiples are common on my line. Lately I don’t do water sets but it’s more of I can move faster with dryland sets and truck stays cleaner without muddy waders in. I wouldn’t put any faith in such statements about drowners and coon. There is no basis for that in my opinion and experience. Jim

I have seen where coon will make a detour around a 220 after a catch or two in a trail. Moving the trap ten feet or so usually solves the problem. You can spook em off deer feeders. Dead coon barely visible in the water I doubt would be a concerning thing.

Using conibear boxes I have caught 1 and nothing after setting footholds in the trail going past the box resulted in multiple catches even after the trail was obliterated except for a small stone i used for a stepping stick My guess is numbers make the difference what one coon isn't interested in appeals to others and competition helps
