Rain and cold coming our way. How do you keep the rain out of your dp's. They freeze up here putting them out of service. Any help would be appreciated.

small cheap styrofoam cup, but only if you absolutely have to, and add some stronger smelling lure...

Gatorade bottles leave the cap on cut the bottom out slide them over the trap , sheds the water , clear enough to see you still have bait and no mice.
they last fairly well.

I've had fair luck using golf balls.

They funneled the water right down around them and into the trap when I tried them.

I have used the red solo cups before when we had rain and snow coming in. From what I can remember, it worked really well and the bright red stuck out in the snow so I could find them again.

off topic here, but in bad freezing weather, dont stake them in the ground. wire them lightly or use a zip tie to hold them steady. if staked in the ground youll have severe leg damage, plus losses from chewing.

Ok don’t laugh but I did this one season in similar conditions after a few frustrating nights of wet frozezen solid traps then a nice warmup out the coon moving and I had no workable DPs in place.
Here we have plenty of stiff weeds growing along trails, like dead sunflowers, nettle, other dead weeds with sturdy stalks.
I took my DPs and cleaned them out and got each operable again. Put a cotton balls stuffed below the trigger and set the trap, gave the cotton balls a good shot of fish oil or coon lure. Then I made sets on trails by putting the DP upside down at angle so trap opening was pointing down and wired the stake of DP (mine were mostly dukes and Z trap models) to the stiff weed stem. I had a really good pickup in my coon harvest even through the next freezing rain stretch. Every coon was able to bust the trap from the weedstem and swivels worked well. Seemed like the bait getting wet before and jamming up the triggers when froze was issue and not so much the outer workings of the trap. Letting the bottom of the trap become the cover seemed to work better.
It wasn’t perfect and I don’t typically set this way but it saved my season that year from more frustration.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I thought about this a little more and I come up with using aluminum foil and lightly wrap over the opening. Going to give that a try. Going to go check this morning and give it a whirl. Rain with chance of light snow the next two days.

Where I trap there is no shortage of rocks. I put a small flat one over the trap. Keeps mice out also.

The tin foil worked. We had a quarter inch of rain then the freezing temps came in. Picked up a raccoon right after so it worked for one.
