Wife and I were driving the Blacktail Plateau road in Yellowstone a week ago when a wolf came trotting down the road, past our truck and up a small rise behind us. I said I got to try to get a picture of this, so i high-tailed it up the rise to where I could see, expecting to see it running on up the ridge a hundreds yards away. I couldn't see it and thought "Crap missed it." I turned to walk back to the truck and to my left 30 or 40 feet away stood the wolf. First thought: Way too close!!! Second thought: Get a picture. Fortunately he must not have been hungry and I made it back to the truck in one piece.

That’s pretty cool that it let you get that close. That first pic is a great one, like it’s posing for you.

According to Rangers, the pack had made a kill not far from where we saw it. When it first came trotting down the road, it had a wind pipe hanging out of both sides of its mouth.

If it just gorged itself it’s easy pickings. Up north the Inuit would just walk up to one and spear or shoot it. He’s looking for a place to take a long nap…lol
Nice pic!

The forehead shows that "wolf" is carrying a lot of domestic dog DNA. Our government should not be protecting mixed breed, feral canines.

Boco is a Warren Zevon fan...?

Neat pic!! Sort of looks like a wild German Shepard minus the dark face. You can see that some big dog brreds aren't too far from their recent ancestors.

I agree, but it seems like they know when they’re safe (no gun). On the other hand, they’ll parallel a trapper on his line at 9 o’clock at night in the bush, never threatening, but kinda lets you know that in the end we’re also part of the food chain…lol. Usually when I’m spotted or they hear the machine in the daylight they’re making a beeline for cover.

Great photo. Sure is a good thing that wolves very rarely attack humans. We wouldn't stand a chance against that bone crushing power.
