I’m saying this is the most intelligent conversation I’ve ever seen on T man!! I think most of us are capable of playing both sides…. There are MANY folks on here with a tremendous amount of knowledge. The Archives are a gem, as a resource to find trapping related information on here.

I’m saying this is the most intelligent conversation I’ve ever seen on T man!! There's a lot more like that in the archives. That's why everyone always sends the newbies there. Wait until you find the one on handedness in canines... your mind will be blown

A friend had a small mink farm before the market went south. The last couple years he gave his pelters melatonin injections. He said they primed up earlier and was worth the time and money.
United we stand.

Get your fur bible out and turn to chapter 54 It explains the anogen catogen and telogen phases of the cycle. All furbearers go thru the priming cycle, but it does not necessarily mean they will have a good pelt when prime.

You'll probably read it elsewhere, but it's daylight hours and color of light. It's the same thing that indoor marijuana growers use to induce vegetative growth or bud growth. Long hours/bluer light=summer time and vegetative growth, short hours and redder light=winter is coming, time to make flowers before it gets too cold. Basically tricking the plant into thinking that it's a certain season. Animals use the same thing. Shortening daylight, lower angle of sun, redder light (from traveling further though the atmosphere) signal the coming of winter, and time to grow some warm fur.

But after 20 years most of us are just tired of posting about how many inches back and to what side a trap should be from a dirt hole LOL. If someone gets me one on one in a PM with questions, I'll tell em what little I know. Same for kids or new trappers... I'll help if I can. But, like most of us old timers, we're not really here to talk/learn about trapping... we're here for the camaraderie.

I've always wondered how animals that den up during the day, so they don't experience any daylight, can be effected by less daylight, that they aren't experiencing. There has to be more to it.
Keith Short of deep ocean trenches there are very few truly sunlight free spaces on this planet.

Keith Think of it the other way around. Not how many hours of light but how many hours of dark they experience. They are out more hours of darkness and denned up less hours during the day..... Time to grow a winter coat

Manitobas on daylight savings time so our fur primes up a bit later than the rest……or is it earlier? A good food source plays a role in how “nice” the fur will prime up too. Like beaver caught in February that had a crappy food bed made of pine or something. Ain’t perfect, but as good as that puppy will get until it finds a new home with good feed.

Just because a furbearer has poor fur due to stress or poor nutrition it can still be at peak of the priming cycle with hair follicles full developed.Fur quality can be poor not related to priming.
