I'm asking the hive for information about how to attract beaver to build a dam.

I know this is opposite of everything I learned here.
The issue is, with the drought in SE Wi there's been a lacking of suitable waterfowl habit.
What I need is bank den beaver to build dams.
DNR said that I can't regulate water levels, but they can.
How can I attract, keep and maintain my slough.?
Obviously this helps the local mink and muskrat population, which has been a "boom" year.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have seen where a couple of logs have raised water levels.

Live trap a couple and transplant them. I didn't really say that, did I!

It's digital currency, I was being a smart butt. I don't know if you can reason with a beaver or not.

If beaver have running water and feed they will create a pond to overwinter.Best feed is poplar.
If you want them there long term harvest two from the colony every year after the 3rd year. You will have to take into account any losses by predators like wolves before you decide to take them.
Best time to take them out is just before freeze up after the feedbed is in place.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

The sound of running water puts them in the mood to build a dam

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Beaver like rats will prefer bank dens over lodges in many cases. If they can live in the banks, it will be hard to have them build dams, unless the water level drops to where they need to. Do you have adequate woody vegetation for them to build a dam? If not they may just move to better habitat if the water stays low and dams get difficult to build.

You should be careful what you wish for. Once beaver take hold , even if you trap them, they can be sometimes tough to get rid of. And can destroy aspects of your property in short order.

This. I wished for a beaver to build me a dam 3 years ago. I got my wish. The little creek they damed up started overflowing the banks flooding all my creekbottom. That's about 22 acres. I tried to find someone to come and get them but couldn't find anyone. That's when I started trapping. Got 4 beavers out of there the first year. Now I get two in the fall and 2 in Feb. I have no idea where they are coming from.the creek is only a foot and a half wide and a few inches deep. They just keep coming!
