I enjoy the smell as well, which is why I consider it a crime to burn hickory unless there's pork shoulder or ribs involved. Seriously, dad wouldn't cut hickory for fire wood and neither will I. Hickory is bbq wood and in Alabama hickory smoke is how you find the best BBQ joints. Removed shagbark limbs for friends from church...big limbs down on their place. Their house is in about a 6 acre hickory grove of huge trees and they are a constant mess for them.

Eastern White Fir here. Keeps the pros barking. I have one shaggy, it doesn't excite me at all. Squirrels love it though.

Been burning hickory as well, great aroma & burns hot....White & red oak are the other two we burn. Shagbark hickory (known as scaley bark here, and the best hickory to burn, IMO.) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/11/full-47568-234985-1000002091.jpg) Pignut hickory, very good to burn also. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/11/full-47568-234989-1000002293.jpg)

We put in ground source heat when we moved in 8-9 years ago. I still cut and sell 40-50 face cords a year. Just trying to keep up with down trees and dying ash.
Cut very little hickory even though we have an abundance.

Friend has a tree service disposal. 99% of what we burn are yard trees that are taken down by homeowner request or storms.
You have to be careful with those type of trees. Nails, hangers, etc grown into the wood can be bad news.
