Just made 3 sets for k9 in the woods

Just to make it clear bout location!

ALL ON ATV TRAILS
THESE SPOTS ARE ALL AND I MEAN ALLLL BRUSH

First set: Right in the middle where to atv trail connect and merge into 1

[Linked Image]

2nd set: 3 trails set right in the middle of where they come together
[Linked Image]

3rd set: on a atv trail spot looked good. Set here just incase a fox or yote comes this way it will get in this trap, if there wasn't a trap here it would have probably passed up previous trap. This is also to make double up

I used to trap the shoulders of logging roads with good success but remember, YOU need to be the first one to get there each morning. If someone else finds the critter before you, sometimes people just can't help themselves.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I always took the dry leaves in my sifter, blend it in a little more. But I have a good feeling for ya after 1 the rest are down hill.

Same here. I think your sets will catch, but I too prefer to run some dry leaves through the sifter to blend it in a bit, especially if coyotes are the target.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

There are guys that trap pretty much exclusively in heavy timber and make catches so be patient with the sets. Your strategy is pretty solid approach for a new guy as it’ll show you options about where to set but more importantly where/why critters move

Some downsides of cover is that there can be more vermin to mess up things. But that also could be cover that allows things like fox to survive in coyote territory. A real downside of being in cover can be the non consistent travel that happens when your target goes into hunting mode. But if you experiment on your current place you have a chance to find decent locations on those atv trails that become travel ways

When the opportunity arises you’ll want to find more ground to get you into additional critters especially different k9 families. Sounds like you’re in mixed ag land. Id suggest thinking in terms of looking at locations 2-3 miles away even if they are small acreage. In lots of spots across Midwest and east it’s fairly hard to find large sections of land to access. I like a big chunk of dirt but I can put together a decent line using 20-40 acre spots. Acres don’t matter so much. It’s finding the right acres and to understand what those are you’ll need to hit what you have now hard enough to get some knowledge built up

Thanks guys, there is a mix of fox and coyote running these. There is never any fox (according to my cameras) that are in the fields, I'm trying to get my first fox, will take a bobkitty but will have to be released sadly! Unless it's season!

A lot of my trapping is done on trails through the woods. I have mixed luck depending on the year. The only thing I worry about is the incidental catches like fisher or cat. Our season for them is still a month and a half out.

I prefer heavy cover like that for Grey Fox if you have them on your line. Good luck and now is a GREAT time to experiment with low prices and very little competition.

Yup that's what I did, I try to think like what I'm trapping... for example, il be like, If I was a fox would I walk here or hunt here? And if I say yes, I set there. Wish me luck, want a red!

40 years ago the reds ruled the eastern fields without any coyotes around. The routes that they travelled are pretty much where coyote are now. Very few reds in most areas where I trap at least compared to when I was kid. But where I find them is where they have protection and that’s cover of various types. I very very seldom catch fox more than few yards from something so thick you can’t walk thru.

Also, early on my philosophy was stick where I thought they stepped. However I learned to plan the wind and my catch rate went up.

I trap all hardwoods and it’s all on logging roads/ Atv highways. Here’s one of my sets I made this evening.
I like to try to make my sets at the splits of the roads or if I see a downed tree right beside them that stands out to me. The main thing I have learned over the years is SET ON SIGN. If your making sets and the coyotes aren’t there then there not gonna catch.
