Wrap a wet towel on the otter and moisten the hide a bit.
I call the bugs on beaver water fleas and find them harmless.

Are you using a belly board?

Act like a blank, get treated like a blank. Insert your own blank!

Or better yet, two. One put in from each direction.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Need a good sized key for otter, about an inch and a half tapering to a half inch.Drill a hole in the big end of the key and loop a string thru the hole to pull the key.(they get tight)
If you boarded it without a key good luck. You can wet it down to get it off then re board with a key,or you can slice it up the belly dead center.

The red bugs on beaver are beetles Platypsyllus castoris to be precise.
They live in the dry part of the beavers fur and live on dead skin cells of the beaver. They do not bite or sting and will leave the beaver and dry up when you let it rest for a couple days in your shed before skinning .

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Find a good spot on a concrete floor and hold the otter vertical with the nose down. Drop, or bounce, the otter on the tip of its nose from a foot or two off the ground a couple dozen times. Its worked for me when I've forgotten to put in a wedge.

A wedge in the belly when you board them will prevent that next time, but like someone said, bouncing them on the nose will work them loose eventually. I call those beaver beetles, they leave if you let your beavers hang for a day or two

I’ve forgotten the keys more than once. A few good taps with the board nose on the concrete (upside down), clamped the base with protection in a vise. Leather gloves for a bit more grip on the hide and the $50 otters came off.
