A friend and I just got back from a week at Grouse Camp. We weren’t having much luck with the grouse, so we concentrated on pheasants and had much better results.

Raven retrieving a cockbird.

A double limit of roosters.

Another nice retrieve, she fetched everything we both knocked down plus found and retrieved a few for other hunters including a disabled Vietnam vet and his grandson that couldn’t find a cockbird he had wounded. Raven found it hiding under a blowdown. She had a heck of a time getting it out of there but she did it. The grandson was very grateful, almost had tears in his eyes. I thanked the vet for his service and we moved on.

Another double limit.

Happiness for me is tired dogs and a heavy game bag.

Yes, hens have been legal for years. They didn’t used to be back when we had a wild population. But, we haven’t had a wild, breeding population in this state for decades. These are all stocked birds. We mostly hunt them on state game land and cooperator farms.

I honestly don’t even know why they stock the hens. Everybody prefers roosters over hens. And there’s really no chance of starting another breeding population, various groups and the state have been trying for decades to make that happen with no result.

If I had to guess, I would say that a certain, small number of hens are included in the chicks they get and they raise them along with the roosters because they don’t want to waste them.
