My two sons rented 30 acres to farm this year. Borrowed no money. Helped them combine the corn last Friday. IH 1460 combine. Allis D17 and a WD 45. I’m a blessed and proud father. [Linked Image]

just like any business there are ways to make money at it rather than all the big fancy machines and tons of other inputs.

Did your boys make any money at it?
At any rate I'm sure they learned alot, that has more value at the end than all the corn they sold.

nice to see

I hope they did well

a friend of mine has converted enough ground to organic now that he running organic beans and corn now
a local feed place has switched to all organic feed and will buy everything he plants because it cuts their trucking costs being about 7 miles

his corn doesn't exactly look like the stuff down the road with ALL the nitrogen and chemicals but it is corn that sells at a premium price.

lots of different directions to go that aren't just go bigger and bigger and bigger.

They had some issues with potassium in part of the field. It yielded 210 avg. I ran the WD unloading on the go with the wagons. Keeping the combine moving makes a huge difference. They will see how they did when the checks come in and figure their expenses. I’m letting them decide what to do unless they ask me. They are 28 and 24 years old.

Still a good average/acre. Heard some unbelievable averages in Nebraska of 360/370/acre.

Nice work Kev, as I'm sure you had a lot of input on this...they need to buy more ground with that corn money.
That way they can furnish hunting and trapping ground for their OLD MAN...lol
Hope all is good with you.

Jeff there’s so much truth in that modified statement, my uncle just retired and he ran a 1440, parts are getting hard to find.

Good stuff Kevin, thanks for sharing. Something to be said for not borrowing any money . And those yields are good , ought to have made a little after expenses. I’m also a farmer, 4th generation - and it’s got to be tough starting out.

You can put potassium down the row either dry ( banded ) or liquid in furrow ( look at Agriliquid products ). This might be more cost effective than a broadcast application of potash and more efficient for plant uptake.

Shoot me a pm if I can be a help in any way

John
