I have an abundance of bears and just may go ahead a kill one. How do you prepare a bearskin before shipment to be tanned? I assume you flesh it and salt it, but don't know for sure. Who should I send it to to be tanned? I've never eaten bear, some say delicious and some say its like eating an old tire. I'm not a peculiar eater as I have eaten dog and monkey and suspect bear is way better.

If your area is like mine an abundance is an understatement. Boco has some posts on dealing with bear skins. Eric

Skin open and stretch and dry on a frame,or nail to plywood.
An 8 foot sheet of plywood can be cut to 6 feet and the bottom 2 feet cut and nailed to the sides and bottom corners to accommodate the front and back legs and feet for nailing.
Turn the ears lips and nose and flesh the entire skin well including the face and head.
Skin out all the feet and toes down to the last knuckle leaving claws and all pads on the skin,do not split the pads.
clean the fat off the pads with poultry shears.
If your drying conditions are poor, use salt in the feet.
You can also nail a bearhise to the outside of a shed wall.Keep an eye on it while it is drying and any spots not drying scrape them down.
If its warm out, keep a can of raid handy and spray any fly eggs that are laid by blowflies until the skin dries.
Once it is dry fold the legs and head into the middle of the skin then loosly fold the skin in 3 and put it in a fur bag and store in a freezer until ready to sell or send to tannery.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Way to many, they are a big problem when bow hunting.

Yea, too many and no way to kill any. Hunt clubs turn the dogs loose during bow season. Turns them nocturnal. Can't bait them. It's like the game dept says, " You can hunt them but you can't kill any!" Muzzelloader season can't kill a bear until the 2nd week. Gun season is dec till end of deer season. That's after they been running dogs for 2 to 3 weeks. I kinda gave up on killing a bear. Got 7 of them on my cameras right now. All nighttime shots.

I had one under me two weeks ago for two hours, should have shot him. I get constant pics on all three stands, and no deer pics.
