Last year along a gasline I trap there was sign everywhere and I couldn't catch a yote. My dirthole sets had bait, lure and urine, which normally works here. One day walking my dog I watched how he approached "unknowns" and reactions, which normally ended in his marking. I started to watch what he marked. I put in flat sets across the gasline from my old sets. They were very simple and had a stick, clump of grass, etc as backing. I put a little couple of drops of yote urine a friend gave me. Next couple of days I racked up.
The "normal" sets had just had too much going on. So the yotes would try to get a whiff or sight of what it was from a safe distance. While working the wood/swamp line across from the "normal" set they would encounter a non-threatening set, they had to investigate. The width of the gasline is between 37 to 50 yards.
I did a lot of note taking last year, plotting catches on maps, noting winds, weather, etc. One thing I found was that when deer season was going your best bet was just using a little urine and scat. There was just too many gut piles and such. I did catch a lot on blind sets to and from carcass dump sites. Once this food source started to run out and breeding season started, the lures and baits worked really good.
