About propane, i bought one of the Mr heater blue flame for my house 3 years ago ,ran it on tractor supply propane ,but did not like the light sooty type smell , so sold it , now i bought another one using the same 20 lb propane tank and got the same smell . Goggle says low quality propane , as dos the diff suppliers , has anyone had this problem and switched propane and found it better?

Do you get the smell immediately or when the tank is low?

Immediately , but i have no idea if there filled to cap when they fill them. flame looks good only a yellowish flicker every now and again.

I haven’t but I thought propane was propane I very easily could be wrong.

If you had a new tank it needs to be purged, or an old tank left open to collect moisture needs to be purged again. The worst time I had was trying to burn butane thinking it was propane.

Blue Rhino propane tank ?

I've had terrible luck with the Blue Rhino brand propane tank from Walfarts, convenience stores,etc. Smell being one of the main issues. Some just flat wouldn't function. I get them refilled at MFA or at the RV place and no longer have issues.

Hard to believe the quality would have gone down in the last couple years

Thanks for the replies , I talked to a refiner friend today and said there was diff grades of propane , residential grade what most use in there homes , commercial grade for construction equ, and even lower grades some mixed with the refining drippings ( white gas ) to get cost down . off brands kinda like gas you get in little cages at the stores . got mine doing ok now . with higher grade gas. just thought i would pass it on.

Parafin wax is added to propane, sometimes in different quantities to account for “grades”.

I don't know if this helps but I notice the exchange tanks have a slight odor but the refilling from a larger tank does not. I don't exchange tanks but refill.
