My other deck hand, kids 19 and downs 2-3 redbulls before 8a.m (shift starts @4:30a.m). Runs though a tin of zynn's every other day. Seems to barely be able to function without being. Pumped full of the stuff .Doesn't to think it's a problem every time we bring it up and is amazed I might sip on the same monster over the course of two days or the same cup of coffee over a 7 hr shift. Told him he's frying his dang nervous system with that much crap and he's gonna become dependent on it...well more then already. Boy I feel old dealing with him

not to mention what he is doing to his pancreases

when you wear out your insulin producer or become insulin resistant , you will be sad you didn't take it easy on it in your youth.

it is an addiction to sugar as much as caffeine since one comes with the other in those packages.

my addiction was to food , when I was 18 turning a wrench oil ,changes and tires and going to tech school.
I started the day with 2 custard Bismarck's and a quart of chocolate milk .
we would hit Old country buffet for lunch it was like 5 bucks for lunch back then , I would clear 4-5 plates.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I have a friend who used to ride BMX stunts professionally when he was in his late teens to early 20's.
One of his sponsors was Monster energy drinks. He had access to as much as he wanted to it at the time.

Drank an obscene amount one day , 10+ cans. Gave himself a minor heart attack at 21 years old.

On the job, I prefer coffee.
Once in awhile, for long road trips or early mornings, I will have an energy drink.
I will also have one some afternoons on job.

I've seen high school kids drink 3+ a day and cannot imagine what that is doing to them.

I used to live on coffee and nicotine. I ate some but not much. I would just "speed" through long days. I then discovered Red Bull and added that to my diet. When Covid started and I wasn't driving past a gas station every day, I quit drinking Red Bull and cut way back on the other stuff. If I drink anything with Caffeine now, it makes me have to pee every 15 minutes for the next several hours. I still drink a pot of coffee in the morning and smoke throughout the day but I haven't had an energy drink in 2+ years and haven't had a Copenhagen in over a year. I only drink water until the sun goes down.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I've never had an energy drink in my life, drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Have cut way back on sugar intake and beer but usually have a toddy in the eve.

Yeah till he keels over on a hot barge and we gotta drag him back to the boat or med flight him.
Like I said though without it he can barely function, and man he's.....he need a lot of work as is. Also, would prefer to at least try to help someone not screw their body up

Sounds like a liability to have and a good one not to call back to the boat next time comming in off days off. Let it be someone else's problem. You can't help those that won't help themselves or care to.

Kids 19
Never has don't this type of work
That plus the amount of caffeine he intakes doesn't mix well.
Call me a liberal or try to use that logic if you want but if your not worried and try to stop something bad before it happens about that mix then idk what to tell you.
Ultimately it's up to him but as someone who's had heat exhaustion and similar I really don't want that for him or any kid in the trades. Again call or compare me to a liberal if you like , but

Bingo. Express your concern for his wellbeing and move along.

I'm not sure what the problem is.

I used to down 2 redbulls before 10am but switched to nasty Celsius as they're less carbs.

Energy drinks don't affect everyone the same way. A lot of people I know say they can't drink them because they get wired and can't sleep. I can literally slam 3 redbulls and fall asleep half an hour later. If I'm completely dragging, a couple of them MIGHT get me thru the day.... but they sure don't wire me up. smile I know other's that half a can gives them heart palpitations.

I agree with other's comments on here... you worry about you.....

And not what others do to make it through the day. Better your deck hand be slamming energy drinks than whiskey, right??

and when he falls out don't risk yourself going after him he was warned. Honestly it's up to the captain to make safety decisions on his boat I would think. Take your concern to him and it's no longer your responsibility.

Probably best if nothing but water milk or juice was allowed on the boat. Maybe decaffeinated coffee? Point of that is where and how do you draw the line?

Low carb food would help with everyone's health also but may make it hard to get hand to stay on the boat. How hard is it to get good reliable hands on the boats? I don't think I would like to work them especially in winter where they would get ice on them. Never liked the idea of drowning much.
