I just had that shot a couple of weeks ago. The buck ran off with arrow sticking out. I found the arrow about 100 yards away in a thicket. I blood trailed for about a quarter mile in the dark. I finally marked the spot and backed out. First thing in the morning I was back on the blood trail. I lost all blood that afternoon. My friend brought his dog out and he spent another couple of hours searching. We never recovered that buck. I was sick!! This week I think I have my buck on the trail camera..

jbyrd- You've killed at least 8 deer a year for 50 years, assuming you started about age 11.

All in Kentucky or other states as well? How many by firearm and how many by archery? I'm sure you must have those stats on an Excel or two.

Any mule deer or pronghorns or just white-tail...?

Ole jbyrd is a notorious, habitual leg-puller. I like that about him, particularly in this instance.

some areas in ky are unlimited doe. It changes by the zone and the year. There are a lot of deer in some places.

I don't know my kill count . The kids asked me years ago and I stopped loosing track a little short of 200. I have not shot a deer in at least 5 years now. And that was because the kise wanted to see me shoot one. I have not put it on them hard I. close to 10 years. Was nothing for me to kill 14 or more in a year in different county's across the southern part of Indiana.

Fair enough. If a single person can kill 10 to 15 deer in a single state a year, and really wanted to do that, yeah, the numbers can add up quick. Personally, I'd be sick of shooting, butchering, and eating that much deer, but f its what you all lived on and it didn't cost you much except for some fuel money to drive to and from a few counties, then it probably works for some people. I like ground chuck beef for burger, medium rare, more than any venison (except elk, closest wild meat I've tasted to beef) but that's just me.

I think I added up one time, back at a more "golden time" of South Dakota deer hunting, a person could take up to about 20 deer a year if they filled in every type of hunting style and region in the state. But you would be putting on multiple thousands of miles on a vehicle to do so and not doing much regular paying work in the fall. But I guess to each their own.

Ya my family prefers deer over beef typically. It's about tile to put it on them the boys are running behind they have only shot 5 between them this year. Girls are getting in the way a d the warm weather made them let a lot walk. I may need to go stick a few this year after all. last year the boys shot 10 and it didn't last the year.

A lot of us donate the deer to hunters against hunger when we kill more than we need

Kid that used to work with me hit triple digits on deer before he was old enough to vote.
Unlimited does, and he'd kill 30+ a year.

I've slowed WAY down, but don't have a bunch of mouths to feed anymore.

Do you pay full freight in getting it processed at an inspected meat locker? Way in the past, I used to take down home processed deer meat to a local mission but that is verboten now. Only big game meat given as charity has to be "officially" butchered. I've donated some money on an annual basis to Hunters Against Hunger when buying hunting licenses but I've never paid full freight (now $150 or above taking in a skin-on carcass) for any deer processing since I got my first buck 45 years ago. In my metro of about a quarter million, I think there are only two places now that will take in carcass deer. Sort of sad to watch that decline over time.

Why would anyone want to shoot 30 does a year...? I would think the state people would be all over that, watching him like a hawk. You all must have does and fawns in every backyard that borders some forest or a farm field.

No, you just put a tag on the deer and put it in a walk-in donation cooler. Call the number and let them know you dropped one off. Fish and wildlife picks it up and takes it to one of the prisons where they have inmates cut it and they grind it and send it to pantries.

I’m not sure if they are inspected or not. Or how the process goes after I put it in the cooler.

Sounds like a good system you have there in your state. Nothing like that here. There must be some seriously dedicated "trustees" to be given knives to cut up deer. I'm glad it works there wink

Like I stated, were allowed unlimited does back then, it was legal and encouraged.
Him and his dad ground and bagged most everything and delivered it to.a local church that distributed it.

One of my brothers got booted off a farm for not killing ENOUGH does.
Couldn't kill a buck.until he killed X number of does, 5 or 10, I think.
Lady wanted to see every deer killed, he started picking up roadkill and sneaking it IN, to show her on way out.

Kill has been declining steadily here last decade.

And this was in Maryland back in the day...?

During that era of time, how many deer were being harvested a year in your state??
