Coyote are building up on my own property in ohio...has anyone tried or had sucess with drop trap similar to those used on ferral cats for TNR....only with heavier cage....using horse livestock panels...coyote are regularly on my trail cam on hay field access road....thanks in advance for any input....my only experience with drop trap is what I've seen on youtube....also can anyone post a photo of what a coyote den looks like in bank of hill....I think I have den but don't want to scare it off with trail cam flash

You may want to contact your DNR for a list of fur trappers in your area. Let someone that knows what they're doing get after them.

If you trap out the family there, the habitat is still good for coyotes. More will move in from adjacent properties.

Understand that you will possibly be trapping for a very long time and never solve the population issue.

If you don't want coyotes around, why would you be worried about scaring them off with a camera? I would suggest keeping a gun handy and finding a local trapper to help alleviate your coyote concerns. Not sure what a drop trap is but I would try footholds.
Good luck

I've taken many Coyotes off my own property, and also joining property's. It may knock the population down for a short time, but the gap gets filled in very quickly. I see less & less trappers in my area trapping them.

Thanks for your replies up to now....I might not been clear on my post......was thinking of building a permanent drop cage trap....maybe like some ferral hog traps I've seen used on internet YouTube....was wondering if coyote would go under metal cage framework for bait...then trip and drop .......can't use foot hold or snares.....too many ferral and or stray cats and dogs....they're really getting comfortable and I'm afraid of being attacked. ..neighbor...now passed away......used to trap them and told me when you remove one or two it knocks them back a little. Seems like groundhog carcass not buried deep attracts them easily

Most of the feral hog drop cages I've seen on YouTube don't have a metal top or bottom. Keep in mind that coyotes can jump over fences, and that they can dig under fences. A coyote would have a good chance to escape that kind of trap, but maybe there are "coyote-proof" versions on the market or maybe you can modify it yourself to prevent jumping out or digging out.

Coyotes are wary of confined spaces but maybe one of those hog drop cages would be large enough that a coyote would enter. I've never tried it but maybe some of the coyote experts here have some thoughts on whether a coyote would take the bait.

You are wasting your time trying to get a coyote into a live trap, even a large one. It has been done but is not an effective way to trap coyotes. Might try rubber jawed traps with daily checks. Feral cats can be released, most of the time with little damage. Good luck!

Thanks for reply......I agree with you on escape.......have idea on homemade version of store bought....smaller,lighter, with wire floor and top....but keeping it strong at a permanent location.....am afraid of coyotes getting too comfortable...and I could end up being dinner.......have been following reports of coyote population in Boston, Mass .........and they are attacking people and grabbing pets off leashes as they are being walked in daylight and dark......just trying to keep that from happening to me in Ohio

Hire a trapper and carry a club. We have coyote and wolves along with bear and an occasional mountain lion. Haven't heard of anyone having any issues with attacks on themselves. A stout whack to the snout with a club will stun them and allow you time to decide how you want to proceed if one gets close enough.

If the problem gets bad enough you will learn proper ways and just release your ferals. Not much of a deal with modern gear. Good luck on your live trap, keep us posted.

Permanent or not live traps for coyotes isn't a good plan. Put simply most coyotes are to smart to go into an enclosed area without good reason and will quickly wise up to it you might get the dumb ones though. There is a reason people like snares and foot holds.

What they are also saying is coyotes if in good habitat and moms being well fed will have large litters of pups. So you may never get the population under control.

I'm not sure where you are at but I'm an Ohio trapper and would be willing to atleast see what's going on for you depending on where you are at, you could also contact the Ohio State trappers association and find a local guy, or if you are willing to pay you can go to an Ohio nuisance wildlife permit holder.

Thanks for your interest....from your post can tell you know what you're talking about, along with several others on this forum. Some have been mocking or poking fun....which I don't mind and is refreshing, since people today have forgotten how to laugh. My reason for trapping live is too many tree huggers are moving into area....along with the trap..neuter...release for stray cat trend is popular....I can't handle having a dog, cat or non target wildlife in footholds or snares. Second issue is I think my idea is marketable and have to attempt it for my own ......seeing it work or not. Only real problem for me is getting a ADC licensed trapper to dispatch coyote after catch and stealing my idea. ........there are a lot of sharp people in traping business. Have everything ready to go except for winter weather and double checking with Ohio dnr wildlife if I'm within their parameters. Thanks again for posting

Why not get the license yourself? You could get a regular trapping license or a nuisance license. I guess it’d just depend what seasons you’d want to trap. If you’re the only one there, nobody can take your plans.

You actually don't even need a trapping licence, you can trap coyotes with just a hunting licence in Ohio. It's still a good idea to get a trapping licence as it's hard to release something like a skunk without consequences.

I hate to tell you though calling an adc trapper to come dispatch the animal you are gonna pay and it will be expensive.

You don't have to worry about someone stealing your idea there are many many styles of drop door traps used out west in many of the more restrictive states. Some are even collapsible, or break into multiple panels like a hog pen style teap
