I do a lot of beaver work and looking to add a canoe for those not so easy to access waterways. What’s a good canoe that is lightweight but can hold some weight? Want to make sure I can haul plenty of traps plus my 270.lb carcass.

Thanks for feedback in advance

I have a used Old Town penobscot 16 footer I bought from a canoe rental place. I sit in the front and face the rear. Works great for me. It handles me and 4 or 5 beavers easily.

Just curious. For those who prefer aluminum is that because of durability or price or some other reason?

I'd be looking at a 14 ft radisson or a 14 foot wenonah fisherman. Rad will be aluminum, wenonah look for a used one in royalex. Both have about a 38 inch width for stability and carry 800 lbs. Either will weigh about 56 lbs. I speak from experience doing the same thing. I have the fisherman.

I appreciate the feedback everyone. This gives me ideas of what to start looking for.

Get a Creek boat. Light and does the job.

I have an Old Town 15' Camper, and a 17' Tripper, both Royalex hulls, and work great for me, Aluminum is too noisy and cold in the winter. Attracts thieves when scrap price is high.

I just keep an eye on marketplace or kijiji.......any canoe that's waterproof at around $100 CAD pick up. I have canoes stashed all through the woods now, never had them stolen as they look beat-up, fingers crossed. Have had them moved and or used but they are usually close to where I left them. One guy even donated a paddle, with a note complaining about the one that was there laugh

Have a old 16 foot prospector in original Kevlar, its my go to. Nice and wide, only weighs about 60 pounds, can handle a load, paddle solo in windy conditions, in and out no problem.

Have been thinking of getting a square back one with a small motor for some of my longer river areas, just have not found one at a decent price yet. Prices of canoes went through the roof here during covid and have not come down any.

I bought an old aluminum 17' one that's a wider then normal and it's great. Holds up great. $100.00 - don't spend a lot- - you'll run into something and have to fix it. I ran over a fence post I didn't se and it came up through the bottom of a fiberglass one I had.
