I tried to set one at nationals and they were way too strong for my liking. With the way they felt, I would trust them to hold coyotes with the right chain and base plated.

Some of the biggest coon I’ve ever caught were in old #11 traps that felt like toys. We have big coon here. #25 pounds and up. My biggest was right around 30# and this was weighted.

Coon sizes vary around the country. Golf Coast coon are much smaller than Mn coon. Trent Masterson, who sells Truckload coon bait, talks about a pair of BIG coon that were 12 pounds. He’s in Ohio. South Dakota coon are as big or bigger than ours.

The trick with any #11 is buy some and try some. Put them on drowners. Stake them as blind sets on dry trails. Use them at coon type dirtholes sets. Use them and see what you think based on your own experiences.

My friend, Dale Billingsley uses a lot of #11 in dry, blind sets. He says he’s caught and held lots of coyotes over the years with these traps. If he can do it, I’d bet you can too
