Post title is my question. Picked a beaver up the other day and he had a pretty big tail for only being 42 lbs. Which made me think, maybe I can get it tanned with the tail on and make a cool wall hanger. Anybody tried this before?

Yes, it can be done. Commercial tanneries - like Moyles do it. Some times the tail gets beat up in the process.

Sweet. I’m planning on sending it to Moyle.

This tanning done at Moyles. As you can see dying or painting the tail after the tanning my be desirable.

Very cool man, thanks. Yeah a little color would be nice, i’m guessing thats what they do when they make beaver tail wallets and such.

Yes they will tan out fine, I've only had Moyes in Idaho do them as well, so cannot speak about other tanners

The tail will almost be white as the tanning takes the color out of the tails most times, I always had my tails sent out tanned in various colors for my leather work, did have some sent to me plain white though, just for something different

If the tail comes back curled you may wet it down and block it on both sides with a couple pieces of wood with pressure
on them until dry to make them nice and flat again, it won't bother the tanning any !

Actually there is still some pigment left in most of the tails. I had about 12 done that way. Like Nancy said some get pretty beat up or curl. This is what the one in my earlier pic looked like after my talented lil' wife hooped it. I did not paint or dye the tail so you can see it actually did have more pigment than the first pic showed. The hoop was vine maple.
