These are the roadkill bucks picked up yesterday in 2 NJ counties. Roadkill deer are gutted, skinned and ground whole thru an 11 inch 50 HP grinder. Used for zoo animal feed. Buck heads with horns are not ground as the horns are hard on the grinder knife. Instead they are composted. In NJ it is illegal to sell deer horns. 22 bucks in pic.

always interesting to hear how they get used

In and around Walworth county WI they collect the road kill in good shape for valley of the kings cat rescue

they make 5 pieces from each

4 quarters and the torso with head head and gut they get volunteers to use knives they take them off with fur

the big cats , lions & tigers have benefited from the diet for several years now.

I know the advising vet for the facility , he recommended the deer diet and they are so healthy he mostly makes checkups now.

the gut and head are important to the diet they get needed minerals from these organs

So they are not skinning and doing gutless method

Brown county WI collects whole road kill for their wolves they put them out twice a week at Bay beach nature center where they have a wolf enclosure
they just drag the entire deer out for them and le them do the work.

Compost is a good idea. All my racks do is collect dust in the barn. They do make some nice knife handles and buttons though

more interesting that they didn't make an exception for the licensed roadkill removal agent.

we have all sorts of exceptions
https://law.justia.com/codes/wisconsin/chapter-29/section-29-539/

what we run into here is any buck with a nice rack road kill will not make it more than a couple hours of daylight before some one cuts the rack off

we have self registration roadkill pickup , just go online or make a phone call and you are all good it is legally taken.

but people stop make a quick job of it with a saw and drive off again
heck we have fee drop off dumpsters in many counties , you can pick one up register it and then anything you take off of it is legally harvested then you can dump all the parts you don't want in the dumpster

Is that an unusually high number for this time of year? Are the wildfires in the Northern New Jersey area having the wildlife move to more sheltered areas?

Lol

if them girls at the bar take a que from that new country song

these are the lyrics

I handed him a beer and looked him right in the eye
And I said "Baby, I think you're gonna wanna hear this"
Then I told him
Excuse me
You look like you love me
You look like you want me
To want you to come on home
And baby, I don't blame you
For lookin' me up and down across this room
I'm drunk and I'm ready to leave
And you look like you love me

well 9 months later there could be a lot of child support checks starting up

I was wonder the same thing. I'm going to be work just south of Eric's location next week and a little southwest of where there is reportedly 5,000 acres on fire.

Eh...wot?

Good to see the carcasses are being utilized for animal feed. We kill over 50K per year with autos. If we had a program again that would utilize a lot that now just rots on the road sides.

Are these heads picked up by a local government crew or did you pick them up? It would be illegal in South Dakota to pick up deer without permission and you won't be able to get a buck unless who give up a "any deer" tag for that county.

South Dakota state government is actually SMART because they auction off big deer racks taken from such road kills or from finished legal cases or just found or "recovered' from landowners-- a "found dead" trophy buck (they have specifics to what that takes) automatically becomes property of the state because the Dept GF&P people do SELL such racks at their annual auction.

You would think some brain power in the New Jersey governmental blob would know there are multiple markets for deer antler and could make money off of such sales. They appear to be totally clueless, and after watching the current NJ governor recently, I can see why.

Fires are not in the counties where they have the contract for roadkill deer removal. Fires here only burn leaves and dead wood not many evergreens in the woods in North Jersey. Live oaks and maples do not burn. Do more good than harm. Normal days pickup is 20 to 40 deer and these are only on county and township roads. Contract does not include state and interstate highways.

Picking up road kill legal here just have to jump through a couple hoops to get permit where you picked it GPS coordinates, sex date and time of pickup, have to remove entire animal and use what you can

we used to have to call the sheriff office and have them tag it.

I made some calls to my state rep about 10-12 years ago , the DNR told him no we can't make it easier it would become a tool for poachers.

a year later they tried online deer registration and as soon as they decided to go to online registration for shot deer they made a web form or call in number for road kill

it is almost like they don't care , you could pick up a deer , wait till you got to cell service or home then register and all you are giving is the approximate place on the road like 1 mile west of Y road on county X , approximate time and leaving your info so they could come check on you.
