Why do people think that when the government spends our money on stuff it is free?

We dont. Its just a lot cheaper to the person that gets it. People think that SS benefits is their money too.

We put them in last year. Although it is a little different scenario than yours. Our only other option was the generator and diesel is $12 a gallon by the time I get it there. I was skeptical at first but we never had to start the generator all summer,we have a 16 battery bank. So far they have been great granted we haven't had them long. They are kind of an eyesore as we didn't have a roofline that would work for them. In my case the positive definitely out weight the negative.

In the next few years I plan on putting some in. But mine will be ground mounted for a few reasons. First I don't put holes in my roof. 2 so I can change the angle between summer and winter sun capture. 3 easier to work on and clean off when needed.

It really depends on where you live and the amount of space you have, electric rates, amount of sun per day, and what you’re wanting to accomplish. Net metering ratios have gone from 1:1 in a lot of places to 4:1 so that doesn’t pencil. Going off grid is about the only way to make it financially feasible. Where I live we don’t have to worry about codes or permits for anything so that was a big plus for me. I’m not a fan of roof mounts just to many things to go wrong and to much expense if something does go wrong. Ground mount is the only way to go in my opinion.

I have a sweet off grid system and love it, but I enjoy tinkering around when I’m not working or trapping. Last time I looked I had harvest (notice I didn’t say produced) 3 Megawatts. If I remember right my system payoff is around 9.2 years and if I add more batteries it’s around 11.5 years. I enjoy being self sufficient. If you’re thinking about doing it to save “The Planet” believe me you’re not. Good luck and if you have any questions ask or PM me

We had them put on three years ago - guaranteed for 25 years, They are paid for now. Average power bill is $25 -30. No leaks no issues. We're happy with them. Electricity costs are not going down in the next 20 years.

United we stand.

Summer electric bill in AZ is 480 with the ac set at 80.
My son has a house also in AZ, smaller, but his bill is 80$ because that is his lease payment.

Roof needed to be done so that the kids do not have to worry about it when I die.
Can’t put them on the ground because it would not allow me to room for the pool,,,,, next

We put some solar panels a few years ago. The guy who did the installation said to go with ground mount so that's what we did

I would be more likely to allow for roof solar in a place like AZ where you don’t have as much rain, snow, etc. Happy trapping! ScottW

Cattrapper, what was your out of pocket cost for your set up, panels and batteries?

I have panels on my roof in Fairbanks, Ak. 8 panels, each panel rated at 265 watts. Total 2120 watts. Best you will get is one kwh per watt. I average 2000 kwh per year. I don't have batteries. Each panel has its own inverter. Out of pocket 8400 bucks. Would have been better off putting 8400 in the stock market, April 2015.

If I had the means oh yes just for the security of having a power source off the grid. Cost is just impossible to justify right now. Batteries would need to make a big leap to be cost viable for me
