Tinker Vs Des Moines would be the case to refer to here. The supreme Court decided that students wearing black armbands to protest the Vietnam War was protected speech. They came up with the "tinker test", which basically said that schools can suppress speech if it disrupts the ability of the school to educate. Wearing a black armband doesn't disrupt the schools ability to do it's job, and is protected. Walking out of class obviously would, and this wouldn't be protected speech. That being said, schools have generally allowed walkouts for other issues.

I'm of the opinion that most kids that walk out just use it as an excuse to get out of school. I sure would have.

They did not set on the bench.
