Might have to give that a shot if I ever try CR's for coyotes here.

What happens when it snows or rains on that chalk? Does It get all gummy and would slow down your lock. Or does it just wash off.

Good question. The author probably doesn't get much rain while snaring wolves in the snow. Down here?? Guess someone will have to try it out and report back, eh?

I've hung a lot of CRs and the only thing I do is spray paint them a dull grey. It seems to work just fine. Besides canines are color blind so I see no need.

Petersburg is in SE Alaska, he gets plenty of rain, believe that. As far as the chalk holding up to it, I'd think it would work great if it's staying frozen, if it's above freezing at all I could see it gumming up like beav said.

So . .... what's the truth here? Big improvement in catch rate over 40+ years and only sets when it's below freezing? Or does the FFG tip deserve a toss of the BS flag?

I wouldnt think so. If you know rain is coming, it would be a simple measure to wipe it off.

The the I would be worried about on this tip really is the background of the snare. If you have a forest back behind the snare and you chalk it or paint it white, its gonna stand out like a sore thumb. Open ground snares it would blend in.

Canines are color blind.
So, you're going to go out before a rain and wipe down all your snares. Not something I would do. Leave the chalk in the school room.

They might be color ind but you put a white object against a black background and vice versa, don't matter your vision, it's going to stand out unless youve got a spot that has a natural tunnel.

If you hang a snare out in the middle of a farmers field in the middle of winter then yea a white snare would be a good thing.
I snare in the bush where everything in the background is black even in winter.Moreso from the perspective of an animal which looks ahead, not down like a human.
Best way to camo a snare is to break the outline of the circle by hanging it in the right spot.Dont hang the snare then try to block it in..Breaking the outline is not even necessary for the majority of animals.
I took some pics last winter and posted them on here and everybody thought the pictures were black and white,in fact they were colour pictures.

We tried this tip many years ago in Alaska. It didn't work for us. Too much trouble and didn't last at all.

We tried painting the snares with spray paint. Much better but has it's own drawbacks as well.

I prefer a snare that has been run through the dishwasher without any paint, dye, wax or anything else on it. Baking soda or dishwasher the snares to dull them.

I agree with The Beav, leave it for kids in school.

It might work for a snare in a pinch, but not on a serious trapline. There are better ways to hide a snare as mentioned above. BS flag on the field.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

Kids in school don't even know what chalk is, most of the new teachers probably don't either. lol Ain't none of them clapped erasers in a coons age either.

I don't see anything wrong with trying to camo snares to get them to look more their surroundings that the k9's go through all the time, but if it's a big hassle I wouldn't bother.

I trapped southeast Alaska for 30 years and can attest to more rain than anyone wants to deal with, (like 60"-80" a year). Chaulk wouldn't even enter the conversation. I fooled around with waxing snares, and both spray paint and dipped.
For me, I would follow BOCO and Beav's advice.

Just doing what I want now.

Yeah, spray paint hasn't let me down yet regardless of weather
